Text format. If it were an image format, it would be impossible to search, select, copy&paste text...

No. It really is a page layout format and can contain both text and images (and sometimes just images of text which can not be edited sans OCR). So PDF is kinda sorta text format maybe, sometimes. Of course almost all of the text formats can contain images and the image format can contain images of text and the audio can contain vocalization of text. However, with a test editor, you can edit text, but not images of text (without OCRing it) nor sounds of text (without transcribing it).
