If you're a coffee drinker at all, let's hope you never have to find out.

Spoiler:
It's when the first spurt of hot water from your automatic-drip maker hits the paper filter in just such a way that it "flops over." Thus allowing the grounds free rein to flow under the filter and into the carafe (and ultimately your cup).

That is a good reason to go back to bed.

*Hint for smaller amounts of coffee, get a reusable filter.
It saves the coffee.

Many filter flop-overs here.

  • French Press coffee maker. Been my go-to for years.
  • Kuerig or Keurig (sp?) or one of those pod things;
  • Instant. Never has filter-flop. Surprisingly good instants out there.

Mr. H is nagging me for a Keurig-style pod-people coffee maker. I get the convenience and speed, I do. But my understanding is that the coffee isn't amazing, so...I'll stick with my old-skool French press. It works, and if the computer goes wonky, I don't end up with Earl Gray instead. (Yes, yes, before someone just has to correct me, I know that's not how it works. You understand the point.) Plus, the FP takes up de minimis counter space.

Your FP is probably easier to clean too.
My question is how do you make the hot water for your coffee?

Ah. Never had that happen, though my filter machine has been retired for a few years now, as we have a Nespresso pod machine.

I grind my own coffee, so I can't really make use of the pods/k-ups (I've never found a you-fill-em-yourself-and-reuse-em thingy that worked well). If it's just me, then I use a french press or a one cup pour-over, but I'm often making for several, so the drip machine is more convenient (and reusable filters are murder to clean--my disposal doesn't take kindly to the grounds, and that sludge won't fall out into the garbage without water pressure).

And it's not that the flop-over is such a disaster itself, but rather that it's become a consistent harbinger of doom. The world caves in on me on flop-over days.

If I have ground I use a French Press. Bought myself some Blue Mountain for Father's Day (comes to something when you have to buy your own gift...), so I needed something to be able to make use of that. As you say, the Nespresso machine's not much use with ground coffee .

And heaven save use from flop-over days...

My coffee maker is a Mr. Coffee style drip coffee maker. I pour water into the well, and load ground coffee into the container. The coffee maker boils the water, it drips through the ground coffee, and the result is what it thinks are four cups of coffee. (It's actually two mugs given my normal coffee cup.)

I grind my own on occasion and it works fine. I've never had a filter flip. (Indeed, the model I have has a filter that rinses out, and doesn't require the filter paper previous coffee makers I've used have.)

The one bit I miss was a feature of an older coffee maker. It had a timer, so I could load it the previous night, and the drip cycle began when the timer went off, so I could awaken to fresh brewed coffee.

A friend is currently in Malta for a vacation, and offered to bring me back some Maltese coffee. Sure. But as I understand it, Maltese coffee as served is much like Turkish coffee, where you get something like coffee syrup as the end result, sipped delicately from tiny cups.

It reminds me of the old Western recipe for chuckwagon style coffee: you put a pound of coffee in a small pot. You add a little water, and boil for an hour. You test by putting in a spoon. If the spoon sinks, you add more coffee.

I'm one of those folks who isn't fully functional till after coffee, and I've been known to ask at Starbucks and the like whether I can get it with an IV drip...

In my last house, I had an Instahot, which was WONDERFUL. I don't have one here, which is a source of...let's say, a small amount of familial friction. I think that they are the BEST. THING. EVER., but of course, Mr. H, being a guy (don't start, guys), thinks that's why God makes Microwaves, so at the moment, I microwave my coffee-water. (Not the same, and no, I'm not going to debate physics.)

Perhaps it's a self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps the lack of proper coffee affects your synapses?

OMG, yes. I would give probably some relatively-unused body parts if I could figure out how to make my FP do my coffee automatically. As I rise first nowadays, my former automatic FP coffee maker (Mr. H) is out of commission.

I've had real chuckwagon coffee--or as real as it gets, in the last century and this, and it, too, has that thick, gooey, pops your brain into overdrive status.

Yeah, me too. I used to be worse--I mean, coffee, morning, noon, night...but as I've, er, seasoned, I've had to cut back. I've been an insomniac since the earliest I can remember, and now, coffee after noon seems to impact my ability to get to sleep, no matter how much I exercise, melatonin, etc. SAD, 'cuz, yes, I love my coffee. Which is why I want my morning coffee to be as perfect as it can be--I pretty much only get one (very large, granted) cup a day, so I want it to be right.

Hey, Hitch. Try one of these. No more microwaving, and you always have hot water available. (Plus it is great for tea, since you can set it for as low as 160, or as high as 208.)

That's entirely possible. I do tend to "wake up" with a cup of gritty coffee in my hands on flop-over days.

After a couple of hours on the charger it still didn't do anything. But pressing the two buttons to reset did work, and it was almost fully charged by then. My own cord is also working.

Now I'm keeping my finger's crossed that my insurance papers arrive tomorrow. Yes, they assured me that I'm insured, but I like to have proof of it.

Or just one of these, if you want it to cost less and also use less water. These are like the British ones, except that our power isn't 220V, so it doesn't go nearly as fast.
