I decided to try the Russian ones (Inspector Pekkala). I read all the way through the sample before deciding, but they might suit my tastes. Thanks!

Secrets of a Lady, apa Daughter of the Game, features Charles and Mélanie Fraser, who later morph into Malcom and Suzanne Rannoch, in this series by Teresa/Tracy Grant. Grant's website says that Secrets was the first one she wrote, but it is not the first in chrono order any more. (See this previous post for a bit more info.) I've read and quite enjoyed all ??? the titles in this series, although it's hard to keep track because Teresa/Tracy doesn't write in chronological order, and, of course, you also have the changing names to keep track of. But still an enjoyable series IMO. Secrets has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Malco...dp/B000UKON44/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/secrets-of-a-lady

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the glittering world of Regency London, where gossip is exchanged—and reputations ruined—with the tilt of a fan, Mélanie Fraser is the perfect wife. Devoted to her husband, Charles, the grandson of a duke, she is acknowledged as society's most charming hostess. But just as the elegant façade of Regency London hides a dark side, Mélanie is not what she seems. She has a secret: one that could destroy her perfect jewel-box life forever . . . and the cost to keep it is an exquisite heirloom ring surrounded by legend and power. The search for it will pull Mélanie and Charles into a gritty underworld of gin-soaked brothels, elegant gaming hells, and debtors' prisons. In this maze of intrigue, deception is second nature and betrayal can come far too easily . . .

First published in 1986 by St Martin’s Press as Cameron’s Raid.

Attack at Night by Robert Jackson

A convoy of Allied troops is steaming through the Atlantic, heading for Italy and a battle that could change the course of the war: Anzio.

But in London’s War Office, top strategists are faced with dire news. Intelligence reports that Germany has just begun to deploy a devastating new weapon, an air-to-sea missile, that could send the Anzio convoy to the bottom of the Mediterranean before it reaches safe waters.

In Scotland, Captain Callum Douglas of the Special Air Service — Britain’s toughest, most select fighting force — is summoned to a secret meeting.
The one hope for saving the convoy lies in a lightning SAS raid to sabotage KG 100, the Luftwaffe squadron that carries the lethal weaponry.

Almost immediately, somebody drives directly at Chris and injures him.
Is Chris on the murderer’s hit list too?
As Chris and Sheila investigate, they begin to uncover a fifty-year-old story of comradeship, corruption and criminality.

Barrie Roberts is the author of four Sherlock Holmes books and previous Chris Tyroll Mystery books, including Bad Penny Blues

The Crooked Man by Shelley Smith

The life and crimes of Thomas Bates display a downward spiral from petty thievery to murder.

With multiple personas on the go, Bates seems unafraid of going too far.
There’s Grace Pickering, whose life he saves and who rewards him with an affection he avoids, until he finds out about her savings account, which he can only disengage through marriage.
His next victim, a man, he is forced to kill.
He marries again, for a dowry in jewels, but returns to Grace until he disposes of her with greater finality.
Bates’ past seems to be left behind him, until his last and final enterprise unexpectedly ends in suicide.
The story makes the headlines and Bates’ anonymous façade is put in jeopardy.
The innocence of the crime is invalidated by his past - will Bates get away with it this time..?

Under the pen name of Shelley Smith, Nancy Bodington wrote 15 crime and detective novels between 1942 and 1978.

A Spoonful of Luger (David Mallin Detective series Book 4) by Roger Ormerod

Private Eye George Coe is staring at the end of his career.
He’s getting older, moving slower, and his bank account has seen better days.
But when nine year-old Dulcie Randall is reported missing, Coe can’t help but take the case – even though it will take him back to a town riddled with memories - memories he’d much rather forget.
Just as Coe starts looking for answers, he loses his biggest clue.
One of the main kidnapping suspects, Dennis Cleave, ends up murdered.
Soon Coe finds himself deep in the shady dealings of a car-breaking yard, sifting through false alibis and lies.

The Kill Dog by John Burke

Maggie Armitage, visiting Prague on a brashly optimistic market research project, sees her plans collapse when a Russian tank settles itself outside her hotel…
Against a background of violence, she drives towards the border — and acquires as passenger: a Czech archaeologist on the run.
Jan's marriage, too, has been violent and his wife, the vindictive Blanka, has been collaborating with the secret police.
This is the nightmare from which Jan is fleeing — only to find himself still enmeshed in its tentacles…
He falls under deep suspicion in England, the country he has loved and respected for so long.
Jan is carrying a valuable secret, but has no idea why exactly it’s so valuable.

John Burke was born in Rye, Sussex, in 1922 and worked in the publishing industry before becoming an author of novels and short stories. He is best known as the author of the novelisation of the popular musical "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang,"

Although it sounds like it belongs in Katherine Hall Page's Faith Fairchild series , The Body in the Transept is actually the first in the Dorothy Martin series by Jeanne M. Dams. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Transept...dp/B00AQK2G42/

Spoiler:
Quote:
For Dorothy Martin, a widowed American who’s moved to the England she so loves, the Christmas service is painful enough. It is her first holiday without Frank. And stumbling over the body of Canon Billings does nothing to improve her mood. Of course, she does get to meet Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, and a good mystery on a chilly English night does have some appeal . . .

As a young woman widowed by World War I, Raissa James is no stranger to ghosts. But when an invitation arrives from Caoin House, her uncle’s estate in Mobile, Alabama, she’s finally ready to cast off the shadows of her past. And what better way to do so than with a grand party in her honor? An aspiring authoress, Raissa’s eager to soak up more of life—and immerse herself in the dark history that haunts the estate.

But the revelries come to an abrupt end when one of her uncle’s guests takes a deadly plunge. And when a ghost from the property’s past, a Confederate soldier, reveals himself to Raissa, she’s more determined than ever to get to the heart of the mysterious deaths that plague Caoin House. Enlisting the help of Reginald Proctor, a self-proclaimed medium, she holds a séance to shed light on old secrets. But she discovers that some secrets, even those long dead, still have a startling hold on the living…

The House of Memory, #2

Spoiler:
Quote:
Raissa James not only sees the dead but she’s caught the ears of the living—especially now that she’s solved her first case. Word of Pluto’s Snitch, her private-investigation agency specializing in the occult, has spread far and wide. It’s even come to the notice of Zelda Fitzgerald, the nation’s most celebrated flapper. And Zelda’s in need of its services.

Along with Reginald Proctor, her partner in detection, Raissa travels to Montgomery, Alabama, where Zelda’s friend Camilla has suddenly become prone to violent fits and delusions. Has Camilla gone mad…or has she been possessed?

Raissa and Reginald soon discover that Camilla’s not the only young lady in the area to fall victim to something unnatural. Now it’s up to the Snitches to follow the clues and save Camilla, locked away behind the walls of the formidable Bryce Hospital asylum. But the key to her rescue might not lie among the living at all. Because Raissa knows that the dead have their secrets, too.
