I've read about 10 or so of the Matt Helm series. I discovered those in my teens and loved them.

I should go back and re-read them to see if they still capture my imagination.

Andres Vachss is pretty hard-boiled. I recommend Shella and That's the way I Roll, but you will probably prefer his series stuff.

The only thing by Avallone that I've read is the Beneath the Planet of the Apes novelization. Not bad considering the limits that novelizations put on a writer.

I read the first three when they came out. I thought they were OK, but I haven't read any of the later ones.

If you want real hard boiled, then Get Carter by Ted Lewis (and its sequels) fits the bill. Made into a great movie with Michael Caine (and a not so great one with Stallone), I highly recommend it.

I'm not familiar with that one, but the title does sort of ring a bell, so perhaps it's the movie that's knockin' on my noggin.
