Personally, I use both pieces of software and find them equally easy to use. One oddment is that while downloading a .acsm file launched ADE and download the epub, I need to click on the book in K4PC to download it -- it is not automatically downloaded when I open K4PC after purchasing though they used to be. I've checked that my current PC is still the default on Amazon's site and a few other suggestions from Amazon's CS -- or in my personal opinion, disservice -- I hate having to follow a help desk nudnick's script on every call. Yes, I have restarted my computer. Yes, I uninstalled and re-installed K4PC. No, I am not going to update to the latest version of K4PC. Yes, I've jumped through that hoop. No, I'm not going to sacrifice a chicken at midnight on a new moon. No, I am not going to reinstall Windows. Meh.

Apache
I have seen some strange formatting after a conversion though Sigil allows me to fix those issues. If you are lucky enough to get a .mobi format and convert it to epub, any images will be specified in pixels meaning that on a larger screen ereader, they shrink with enthusiasm -- a image displaying at 600px x 400px goes from a full width image covering half the screen height to an image covering 41% of the screen width and 21% of the screen height on my Aura One.

Wow! I expected to get a "it doesn't matter, they are the same" sort of answer and a very short thread.

Thanks for all the responses!

I'm going to stick with Kobo for now. I haven't been unhappy with them, except for no longer having a web reader and their desktop app doesn't work on my work computer. (I can't really try to troubleshoot it when I'm not supposed to install my own software.) It's just for lunch and it's not a big deal to have to plan ahead for my next book.

Well, I guess the thread is wrapped up. But I did want to ask what issue you've had with Nook books?

I mainly purchase from Amazon, but I've found books downloaded with the current Nook for Windows 10 app have no DRM removal issues in Calibre without any need for ADE.

If for some reason Amazon were to disappear, Nook would be my back-up.

It has been a while since I tried, but when they changed the way that books could be downloaded, I could no longer unlock them from DRM. I could download them, Calibre could recognize them, and that was all I could mangage.

It seemed like it wasn't a big deal, because I had a NOOK HD+ (that recently decided it could not open any of my NOOK books. I have not looked into that at all, although thinking it through right now, I suspect that one is credit card related and easily remedied.)

It may be time for me to try again -- the last time I tried, there wasn't a native way to download in Windows and I was using the old NOOK Study program (as recommended at the time.) I kind of gave up on NOOK when I lost the app on my Windows tablet; however, I've never looked on the PC side for a Windows 10 app. I'll look into that -- I would love having that as an option again. Thanks!

Yeah, I was bitten when B&N arbitrarily changed their DRM scheme. There were workarounds, but at that point I switched to Amazon.

Running Windows 10, I just installed the Nook app from the Windows store and signed in to my B&N account. It let me download the book and I was able to move it over to Calibre with Alf's tools and it worked. This is a brand new laptop and I didn't do any special configuration and it all worked easily. The biggest issue was finding the folder where the app downloaded books to (and I believe the file was just a bunch of numbers).

I'm still sticking with Amazon for their selection. But from my experiment, I would move over to B&N before trying Kobo, Google Play or any of the others.

YMMV of course.
