Bumping the poll because of this month's book club selection of Jane Eyre.

I'm going to add that I've read Villette since I posted this poll and it's excellent.

I can't stand any of the Brontes, give me Jane Austen any day. JE was a set book at school and I loathed it enough to want to avoid all others.

I must confess that I don't understand what this poll is asking!

A Goodreads friend panned Jane Eyre because her would-be-husband wasn't hot.

I read both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights in high school. I must have been fairly indiffererent to Wuthering Heights, since I can't remember my reaction to it, but I despised Jane Eyre. Until a few years ago, I had my original paperback copy of Jane, filled with my penciled-in comments complaining bitterly about having to read such a horrible book about such a stupid twit. My old copy of Wuthering Heights, however, merely had occasional underlining, so clearly it didn't arouse my ire.
I've seen bits and pieces of both the classic movie versions, but I don't believe I've ever seen either one completely. I have audiobook versions of both novels; I've tried listening to Jane but I couldn't get through the book (I never abandon books, but since it was a reread, I happily gave myself permission to quit). A few times I've been on the verge of listening to Wuthering Heights, but I keep back-burnering it in favor of some new thriller or mystery. Reading either of the books seems like a chore, not a pleasure. Someday I'll grit my teeth and do it. |

As to the poll, I like both WH and JE, but JE somewhat better (fortunately I was not forced to read it at school). WH is a bit too depressing, imho. |

Me either! "Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre" for what? book you liked best and/or thought was better quality? book you most hated?
Going on the assumption that we are supposed to choose the one we liked better, I have a vague memory of reading Wuthering Heights in school a few decades ago and not liking it very much. I read Jane Eyre on my own later and didn't dislike it but it's not a personal favorite. I prefer the lighter touch of Jane Austen. I didn't vote in the poll. |

It's been a few decades since I read them all. Villette's ending, and how it made me feel, I remember. |

That should be motivation for me to reread Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. They will probably feel quite different after reading the Thursday Next series.

I read The Eyre Affair several years ago and gave it three stars on Goodreads. I just read Jane Eyre for the first time and enjoyed it, so I'm ready to give Thursday Next a re-read. I remember absolutely nothing about it. First I must read two library books on hold that have just come available, as well as Wuthering Heights.

I read JE as a teenage and WH in my twenties. JE was quite good, liked to come back to it sometimes. But WH was a disaster - totally unrealistic narration from an old woman of things she somehow never forgot (in detail) and scenes she never witnessed. It didn't really appeal to me in any way, so definitely JE. Villette was nice, though I can't remember much of it. Need to check out The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
