Oddly, I've used the same Adobe ID for ADE for close to 10 years -- it was that long ago that we switched to longer names for email addresses. So far, no problems other than copying the activation file from ereader to ereader to save having to beg Adobe again for additional activations.

OTOH, reading about B&N makes me happy to be a Canadian. At least us denizens of the Great White North don't have to deal with B&N. Though we might have to worry about being nuked given that some Americans' knowledge of world geography ( or more precisely, lack thereof ) had them pointing to Canada as North Korea's location.

Well, from their point of view, Canada/North Korea are dumb places to live, so who cares where they are?

For the shellacking they take, I bought graphic novels from B&N years ago and have bought Big 5 books from them more recently and (aside from the hiccup where they made an unannounced change to their DRM scheme), I've never had problems obtaining any of my books or moving them to a tablet or Kobo and have never had to deal with ADE.

Indeed, unlike Amazon or ADE, you don't have to use a deprecated version of their desktop app to be compatible with Alf.

Look at me, defending Barnes and Noble. Who'da thunk it?

Resolved! (Sort of)

BAM has contacted the distributor and have refunded my purchase. They have also removed the ebook version of the comic I wanted to read.

I did not try Adobe ID because that gives them permission to send me more email. (You cannot opt out.)

I used the BAM email/password because the BAM support said to use it (after choosing Books-A-Million from the drop down menu.)

Today, I tried it with the option of NO ID which would authorize the computer but not allow for transfers. THAT WORKED! I think. There are no errors but I haven't tried any ebook purchases.

I have learned from this experience and from reading your comments. Thank you all.

The stores do not send email based on your user ID with Adobe.

When you first get an ADOBE ID (if you want to post to one of their forums or authorize your computer with an ADOBE ID) You will see this message:

Adobe may keep me informed via email about products and services.
I try to keep authorized notices to a minimum. Sorry for being unclear.

I have not checked what happens when you first get an Adobe ID, but once you have one you can certainly opt out of any communications from Adobe.

I learn something every time I look into this forum.

When I visited:
https://www.adobe.com/privacy.html
I chose the option, "Adobe Privacy Policy"
I did not see an option to allow me to opt out of added communication.
I was in a hurry and must have missed it.

I went back and tried to get a screen snap of the login ID page. You can see the intent to email at the bottom.

But, you can opt out from Adobe's email after the fact. I have not opted out and the only email I get from Adobe has to do with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements since I bought Photoshop Elements 14. I really didn't get much email from Adobe.

The following is at the bottom of the email I get from Adobe.

This is a marketing email from Adobe Systems Incorporated, 345 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110 USA.

So yes, you can unsubscribe to Adobe's marketing email.

Why do you have to wait for your next computer? You can get ADE 2.0.1 now and register it now.

Yes, you want ADE 2.0.1 (no later version) or you might end up with eBooks you might not be able to read any other place but your computer.

Some of us old-timers still go to libraries.
However, in the 21st century we can also go to electronic libraries.

The vast "OverDrive" ebook library system uses ACSM files. When you go online and "borrow" a library book, the ACSM file links the book to your library account, then you can download the actual ePub. When the loan time expires, DRM kicks in and the book is no longer readable.

OverDrive, Adobe and ACSM have been working well together for many years.

That just happened. I downloaded a freebie from the Adobe library. I stopped to power down and get some lunch. Back to the computer. The book expired.
I knew it was going to expire soon. I though it mean the availability would expire. No. It was the book itself.

I use OverDrive with the Houston, TX public library system and get a 14-day loan period. I know that some of the Adobe "sample" books expire after 30 minutes (ie: "Tony Hillerman E-Reader"), but I thought that some of Adobe's public domain books were permanently "free". How long did you have the book before it died?
