The reading is by Hugh Fraser (of Poirot fame) and is quite amusing. He is delivering the story with dry wit and a pleasant pace.

You've inspired me to request a BBC Radio 4 dramatization of the complete Barchester chronicles from the Ottawa Public Library.

I recorded them when they were initially broadcast. Enjoyable, but very much truncated, of course.

I'd wondered about how much pruning would be done to make it work as a dramatization. Trollope could be prolix, but also so witty when he was on.

The whole series is 20 x 1h plays, the first two of which comprise "The Warden". It's well worth listening to - very enjoyable.

FYI, the recording of The Warden alone is 10hrs. So, yeah, serious truncation.

It's a dramatisation of the book, though, not a reading of it, so different considerations apply. I dislike abridged readings, but dramatisations can be very good, and this one is.

I remember The Warden as being a bit svelte, relative to Barchester Towers and Dr. Thorne.

Finished "The Heir Apparent", by Joel Rosenberg. The fourth book in the "Guardians of the Flame" series, and the first half of the Baen omnibus "Guardians of the Flame: Legacy", which I bought in June 2004. The series as a whole is the "a group of D&D players get transported into a fantasy world where they become their game characters for real" thing which has been done a number of times, but this is one of the better ones, to my mind. Sounds corny, but well worth reading. Recommended.

This is, unfortunately, one of the many books I've bought from Baen in the past which is no longer available.

NB: Joel Rosenberg, who wrote fantasy novels, is not to be confused with Joel C. Rosenberg, who writes political thrillers.

Well, I finished Serafina and the Splintered Heart which post I managed to make diasappear before it ever saw the internet... anyway, I just finished [i]Armageddon 2419 A. D.[\i] by Philip Francis Nowlan. This was a short novel, as pointed out by whomever spotted it on sale in these forums, that is the foundation of the Flash Gordon serials from the late twenties and early thirties of the last century.

Now I am still reading the Numbers book, about halfway through, and also Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" by Corey Olsen.

If you like his fantasy try his Science Fiction Series Metsada Mercenary Corps.
It is a four book series although my favorite is Not For Glory.
