Second Level Limit?
Hello,
Does Calibre have a limit as to how far in a book you can use level 2 entries? I worked on a Bible in .docx format, converted it to ASW3 format and have been manually entering points for the table of contents. I have been using level 1 entries for the different books of the bible and level 2 entries for the chapters in the books. Everything was going fine until I got about 75% of the way through and the blue line just disappears in level 2. No matter what I do I cannot get it to show up beyond this point. I thought that maybe I had reached an entry limit as to the number of entries the level 2 can have, so I deleted every other level 2 entry and I still have the same problem. If I use level 1, the blue line stays visible all the way to the bottom of the book. Is there anything I can do to make the blue line show up all the way to the end of the book in level 2? I have put years of work into this. Any help you can give would be appreciated. |

Then use the built in TOC Editor, it will allow up to generate up to five levels from xpath expressions. bernie |

Thanks for the Reply gbm but I already know this.
As I said, I have been manually entering points into the Table of Contents and things were going fine until this problem showed up. Calibre uses a blue line to show you where the entry point would be if you click there. As you scroll up and down the blue line follows the cursor and you click to make an entry point. I am using level 2 for the different chapters in the bible I am making the table of contents for. While scrolling down, at a certain point the blue line disappears. Without the blue line you cannot enter points. I have tried using both Calibre Portable (what I normally use) and even tried the installed version to see if it were a problem with the portable version. With the installed version, the blue line stays visible a litter further than the portable version, but not by much. I need the blue line to stay visible to the end of the book so I can complete the table of contents. |

@Br.louis - when you used the installed version of calibre, was it the 32bit or 64 bit edition? And how much RAM does your computer have.
Why do I ask? Well, the portable version of calibre is in fact the 32 bit version with a 'special' launcher. It's the 32bit version because its design target is a USB thumb drive which can be plugged into whatever Windows computers happens to be available (think internet cafés). There's no way of knowing if they will be capable of running 64 bit programs - in other words it's a lowest common denominator solution. Now, if you installed the 64 bit edition, and your computer has say 6 Gig of RAM, that might account for the difference in behaviour. 32bit bit Windows programs can only address about 4 Gig of RAM. while 64 bit Windows programs can address almost 200 Gig of RAM. So, maybe the solution is to use the 64bit edition of calibre and get more RAM. It might be worth having a look at Sigil's TOC building capabilities, I'm not inferring it is better than calibre's, only that that it may not suffer the same limitations in this particular respect. Sigil is limited to ePub, so you'd need to convert the DOCX to ePub first. BR |

And what about Windows on Stick implementations, most of them only seem to have 2 Gig on board - could they run 64bit calibre? Maybe a case could be made for two Portable's editions (32 bit and 64 bit), or an 'install time' option - but I'm not advocating for either. BR |

My Bible (Roman Catholic) (ePub) has 2 levels in its TOC: books and chapters. No separate level for Old/New Testament. Prepaired with the calibre editor. There was no problem editing or reading with various reading apps.

delete the Calibre folder that exists there and then rename the Calibre2 folder you just copied to Calibre Now just start calibre with calibre portable as usual |

Well Dopedangel, I did everything like you said and now have Calibre 3.6 [64bit], but am still having the same problem. The green line is visible to a certain point in the book and then just disappears.
Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions? |
