Metadata Plugboards - Question about title sort
Hello!
I've recently used this guide to set up shelf management in my Kobo Aura H20. I set up the option for <Series> - <Number> - <Title>, and chose kepub for format and title sort for destination. I wanted for the series to be sorted by the renamed title with the series at the front (i.e Poirot - 01 - The Mysterious Affair at Styles but to display the unedited title on screen (so it would just look like "The Mysterious Affair at Styles") on screen. (This is because I use the Kobo Plugin in Calibre to sync the series underneath the book title, and would prefer not to have a double up of series information on the screen.) However, it doesn't seem to have worked, as my kobo is still sorting the books by their visible title (not their 'title sort'). My question is: does the kobo understand 'title sort', and is it possible to set up the library to sort by one metadata but display another? Was it an error to select kepub instead of epub? Any help would be greatly appreciated ![]() Last edited by lealla; 08-18-2017 at 06:56 AM. |

No, the Kobo devices do not have a separate title sort. Whatever is in the title is what is displayed and is how the title sorting works (with the exceptions of articles such as "the" and "a"). The same goes for the name and the series sort in the firmware versions that have it. And the series sort largely removes the need to add the series info into change the title. That part of the guide is a little bit out of date.
I would recommend removing the title changing part of the plugboard for the future. You can fix the metadata for books already on the device with my Kobo Utilities plugin. |

Thanks Davidfor, that is a very helpful summary. I did notice the sort by series on the kobo, but it doesn't work so well for collections with multiple authors. Never mind, I'll just work around it for now

I have several collections with multiple authors, and don't see any obvious problem? Sort by series works fine (including non-integer series numbers)?

Sorry - that was a very vague thing to say!
What I meant was, I like how it sorts on calibre, which is firstly by author, and secondarily by series. So, Douglas Adams comes before Bill Bryson, and their books are sorted by series alphabetically, with standalond books fitting in alphabetically into place between the series. At the moment, on the Kobo, my series option sorts all the books by title, and then by series. So, when I have say, a collection for fantasy, it sorts all the books by the series title / book title, and all the authors are mixed together. However, this is not a problem, just a preference issue on how it sorts. |

Thanks Davidfor, that makes sense. I don't expect to be able to change the way Kobo sorts, but I hope one day Kobo might use dynamic search too. At the moment, I've taken to browsing my books on my phone via Calibre companion, and then just using the search option to find them on my Kobo. Not the most seamless, but it works ![]() |
