The battery was faulty. LiIon isn't perfect. My new device is working well. Buy a Lenovo notebook.... then you will see what really FAULTY means.
I have a S1 too. No problems at all.

I've owned dozens of Eink devices over the years. Sadly, it seems like we are going backwards. Still, I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if it came with open Android or be able to use it as an external monitor. As a dedicated PDF reader, it's a tough sell.

You don't need 13.3 inch for epub or mobi really. Being able to read A4 content comfortably opened a new world for me.
Personally I don't have a need for a second monitor functionality but I'm sure for others is useful.

At US$2 per unit I can get quite decent ball-point pens which will probably last 10 times as long as those stylus tips or even longer. The thing wears off faster than a pencil (and it's definitely much shorter than a pencil, being only a "tip"). I've used wacom/surface pro/sony duo stylus before, and none of them wear as fast as RP1. This is almost enough to put me off from buying had I known it. If Sony can't make more lasting tips, they should definitely lower their price.

By the way, the ball-point pen tip leaves stains on the display. It can be wiped off with a wet cloth.
Do you have any idea what pen technology does the RP1 use? Is it Sony proprietary?

Cheers.

I like to use my technical books and other technical documents with the EPUB format . I like to be able to change the font or the font 's size, sometimes it's better in my case than the PDF file, even if I zoom in.
When I use a train or a bus, it's useful to be able to change the font or the font 's size.

The EPUB format is interesting when you have some troubles with your sight. With a big screen you can have more informations displayed, it's better with technical documents or novels. I'm sure of that because I've read "Managing NFS an NIS" from O'Reilly on a 6" screen :-;

I use some documentations that are in the HTML format with my Onyx M92. A bigger screen will be better. Some HTML documentations can be converted in EPUB and after in PDF ...

I think is not the document 's format the most important, it 's the type of document, novel, theatre, technical, etc.

Just my 2 cents. I think the RP1 is simply the wrong device for people like you. The E-Goodreader might be the right one for you. For me the RP1 is perfect, but the lack of some S1 features is currently annoying. Just a EPaper with 100% PDF support... The S1 had all features I needed, but it was a bit slow

My comment was about the idea that with a EPUB file, a big screen is useless. When I read this thread, it's probably true that the RP1 is very good for PDF.

And you're right, I know that I need to use some other formats than PDF, so buy an other device. If the DPT-S1 had the EPUB support for EPUB, I 'll already have one.

For other people who plan to order the device:

Just got of the chat with B&H about my order. They're STILL waiting for the RP1 covers to come in, and they have no info when they receive them for at least 2 more weeks.

Amazon doesn't even bother to list them anymore.

I fear I won't have it for at least another month...

Has the navigation issue been fixed? I'm thinking about importing a device from Amazon in September (EU). What are you guys using for reading in the darkness? Thanks.

Navigation issue has NOT been fixed in my knowledge, same guessing & scrolling through tiny progress bar(bookmarking with star helps sometimes).

For reading in dark, I just use the book light(http://www.somnilight.com/store/p2/S...ook_Light.html helps with sleeping as well )

Anyone looking at that device would be well advised to do a thorough read through the comments on their IndieGoGo site before contributing anything.

Ok.... WOW. The device is some kind of scam. I was looking for a 13" EPaper and found that device a year ago. Looked promising at that time.

The people behind that device have had a very poor reputation around here (for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is using Mobileread posts near verbatim with no attribution of the actual author or even indicating it's not there own work) long before they started into the device. WOW is a good description of the goings on with it though

OK so I just received mine. Looks very nice, although the first thing I did is lovingly run my hand across the screen, and immediately felt that the screen is a little wavy. No biggie, but it would be great it is was flat.

Second thing, I spent a few seconds looking how I could peel of the plastic information sheet on it. Until I plugged it in and the screen changed. Great screen confirmed.

Third thing: that EULA really is quite something. Paraphrasing: We may collect information on your location, on the devices you connect, on the contents of the device, and share all of this with partners. Even if they don't abuse this, these are overly broad terms. It does look like this is their standard EULA for connected devices, but they really should update that to be more protective of the consumer.

Quote:
CONSENT TO USE OF NON-PERSONAL INFORMATION, LOCATION DATA, DATA SECURITY
You acknowledge and agree that SONY and its affiliates, partners and agents may read, collect, transfer, process and store certain information collected from the SOFTWARE, including but not limited to information about (i) the SOFTWARE and (ii) the software applications, contents and peripheral devices that interact with your DEVICE and the SOFTWARE (“Information”). Information includes, but is not limited to: (1) unique identifiers relating to your DEVICE and its components; (2) performance of the DEVICE, the SOFTWARE and their components; (3) configurations of your DEVICE, the SOFTWARE and the software applications, contents and peripheral devices that interact with the DEVICE and the SOFTWARE; (4) use and frequency of use of the functions of (x) the SOFTWARE, and (y) the software applications, contents and peripheral devices that interact with the SOFTWARE; and (5) location data, as indicated below. SONY and its affiliates, partners and agents may use and disclose Information subject to applicable laws in order to improve its products and services or to provide products or services to you. Such uses include, b ut are not limited to: (a) administering the functionalities of the SOFTWARE; (b) to improve, service, update or upgrade the SOFTWARE; (c) improving, developing and enhancing the current and future products and services of SONY and other parties; (d) to provide you with information about the products and services offered by SONY and other parties; (e) complying with applicable laws or regulations; and (f) to the extent offered, providing you with location-based services of SONY and other parties, as indicated below. In addition, SONY retains the right to use Information to protect itself and third parties from illegal, criminal or harmful conduct.
And that's just part of it. At this point users just have to trust that whatever Sony collects is not abused and secure on their site. Which historically umm....
