You did not say that you where working with a Demo version of the Kindle.
But the principle is the same, there is nothing user specific in the factory images.

I just say that the factory firmware (which I downloaded from the first page of this thread) includes a Data package with some demo books and dictionaries. There's a screenshot of what I mean:

I'm using a PC with Windows 7 Enterprise (also tried on a WIndows 7 Professionnal)

Not working: I mean it seems to have absolutely no effect. The screen doesn't seem to flash, it doesn't restart and the tar.gz file remains where i put it. So, in Kindle (F I have:
- folder "Documents" (Modified 14:29)
- folder "system" (Modified 13:48)
- file "main-htmlviewer.tar.gz" (Modified 16:30)

I tried installing the hotfix, wanting to check if maybe it worked without me realizing it, but it says update error (invalid file or something, I can try again if needed).

Is that what you are looking for from the logs?

It is harmless.
That is the factory production line use only firmware you are looking at, it will all go away again in Step #7 when you over-write it with your choice of a customer firmware release.

It did call the script, but that script did not return any status value.
(only the first line of those messages applies to your trying the searchbar command).

But my colleague wanted to "help" me and confirmed when prompted for update.
So I'm now with a wonderful 5.8.10 (3202090019) PW3.
Which i guess will take even longer to have a solution to JB..

I still think I probably was not the only one with a 5.8.9.0.1 not able to run ;installHtml and this might help other people. So, thanks for your support.

Hi, the process I was talking about was specifically about trying to build an FB02 package that would work for PW3-32 Manga mode.

The FB03 packages must be signed with amazons official signatures.

The FB02 package is not signed itself, but still the individual parts need to be signed properly.


the FB03 packages of 5.8.8 and higher are what apply the "downgrade protection', thats why we need to keep using the FB02 packages.


So my goal was to extract the 5.7.4 'rootfs' with the 5.8.7 uBoot and uImage.

I tested with 5.8.10 uImage, but that is a bad idea, and I had to recover with serial port. Because only half of the new protections were available. ( I could have upgraded to 5.8.9 or higher instead of recovering with serial, but then I would not be able to downgrade again without serial - it wasn't bricked, I just could not re-install the same update. )

5.8.7 appears to fully support manga model, so I went with that one.

This still only works if people have the OS that is allowed to downgrade, 5.x 5.8.7, and 5.8.9.0.1 ( and other fresh out of the box images ).

If you are willing to try this 'frankenstein-update' I have it available here.

Reminder - this is a frankenupdate. I don't think it will brick a PW3-Manga, but there is always a small chance.

The name still says 5.8.10, but it should be better named "5.7.4_5.8.7".

We did have a report from another user that could not use installHtml on a 5.7.4 image as well.

In his case, he was German Language.

I know users of the Manga Model will be likely to be Japanese Language.

I have no evidence for this, but I have a thought that choosing a non-english language on the startup screen removes this option?

Can you confirm which language you set up with?

Were you running 5.8.9.0.1 when you tried ';installHtml', or on 5.8.10?

And now, what am I trying to do:

You see, the new versions don't allow downgrade, you can either install a newer version or install the same version, you are currently running, as update.

For example, I'm running on 5.8.10. If I put the official "update_kindle_5.8.10.bin" on the root on my Kindle, it actually reinstalls.

So, I'm trying to put the rootfs from the initial factory version to the 5.8.10 update package, just to get that ";installHtml" command.

Is everything clear now?

Unless it comes straight from Amazon, you cannot install anything else on that firmware.
The installHtml only works on 5.8.9.0.1 or previous versions before 5.8.8.

At the moment there is no jailbreak for your firmware.

You can try but I can't guarantee you won't wind up with a paperweight instead of a KT2.
I think your firmware kicks out everything.
There are people looking for a solution but it is going slow.
