And at least in the early days, real-time market research.
It says so, using different words, in the 'legal' document included on the DX(G) models.
You know, that document too long to be read by a human (I do not count lawyers as a member of that group for the sole purpose of this single post).

Hi all, I want to add in here that it appears that 5.8.9.0.1 , the ones that can install ';installHtml' also probably have the amazon usbnet installed too, like the 5.7.4 did.

Does anone have a link to usage of that factory usbnet, and whether our python fiona passwords should work on it?


Since this 5.8.9.0.1 sees to be a mistake, should we recommend that people upgrade as soon as they get the jailbreak and hotfix installed?

Your friend tried with PPW3-32GB and successful with 5.8.9.0.1, right or I just misunderstand it ?

The 'fiona passwords' are only valid for the 'diags' system.
Password login is most likely still blocked in the 'main' system. Take a look at the contents of the second field of the single line records in /etc/passwd of 'main' to be certain.

I'll update the appropriate post with the network information once I get it.
It hasn't been posted since the days of the K4 IIRC.

No results directly reported.

Initially, that user claimed he could not make the ;installHtml command to work - which is doubtful, since it works everywhere else when tried.
Nothing has been posted since he should have re-tried whatever he actually did.

I want to get your thoughts on this.

I'm not ready to recommend anyone try this, because I have a differnt idea, but I am thinking about re-packaging this update into a FB02 package ( like the factory firmware ) , that has these three componenets.

uboot from 5.8.10 update
uImage from 5.8.10 update
rootfs from vulnerable PW3 5.7.4 update.

my understanding of the rootfs is that it should be separate from the uboot and the kernel ( uimage ), in enough ways that it should not brick the device., and the rootfs shoudl not have any hardware specific stuff that might break a pw3-32GB. I think the only significant differce between them are the board ID that are in uboot, and the amount of memory in uboot and the kernel, but I dont think any of the linux userland stuff is affected by that.

At least when I do a diff on the extracted rootfs from 5.8.1 and 5.8.10, I don't see any references to hardware.

What is your first impression on this based on gut feeling about how people have bricked before?

I just tried something similar with Kindle Tool 1.6.4 MinGW on Windows, downloaded from NiLuJe's thread and my KT2 doesn't seem to like it. Maybe it's because of the signing. I'm just going to look it up online.

I'm not sure should the bundle be FB02? I think it may be FB03 - that's what I try. The 5.8.10 Update package is FB03 and that's obviously what the Kindle likes. Would it work with FB02?

Also, the factory firmware contains user data image. I don't know should we put it in the update? I mean, the Kindle should already come with this out-of-the-box.

No, it does not.
The factory firmware is only mmcblk0p1 ('main' system's partition).
User and device specific date is either outside of the partitioned areas of the eMMC device, or:
in /var/local (partition 3)
in /mnt/base-us (partition 4)

The factory firmware could not have user data in it -
Amazon would have to build an update package for each user, not for each device.

I have the same issue. ;installHtml is not working on my kindle.

Details:
Bought it beginning of the month.
PW3 (G090 G1) version 5.8.9.0.1 (3175970011)
I did a reset before starting the steps (might be the issue..).
After having copied the main-htmlviewer.tar.gz on the kindle, i search for ;installHtml.
But it has no effect at all. (I tried resetting again, with and without registering..)

";dm" works, though.

Let me know if you want additional info.

please post a screen shot of how the topmost level of visible USB storage looks after you place the main-htmlviewer.tar.gz file on it.

Excuse me, I meant "on-device demo recources" or whatever you want to call it. It includes some bitmaps for some UI elements (such as Kindle Freetime and Goodreads), some demo books, two additional fonts (for chinese users) and dictionaries.

BTW, could you please tell me the best way to call this "data.stgz" image, so that there is no reason to smack your head the next time I tell you something about it?

The system is case sensitive, you have to use lower case when lower case is called for.
The normal start-up code tests for that file name (in the correct case).

You did not say that you where working with a Demo version of the Kindle.
But the principle is the same, there is nothing user specific in the factory images.
