Thumbs up Free (Kindle) Emergence by Ray Hammond [Sci-Fi Info Network Entity Technothriller]

Emergence by British author Ray Hammond (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE), a science journalist and futurist, is his standalone contemporary science fiction technothriller set ten minutes into the future, centred around an aggressively dominant corporation's deployment of a new satellite technology which connects up and stimulates information networks in a way which leads to the unexpected development of a new, potentially world-changing entity, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.

This was originally published in 2001 by Macmillan UK.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

Description
Thomas Tye's phenomenal financial success is due to a secret known only to a very few at the top of his corporation.

But the monopolistic and increasingly bizarre activities of the mighty Tye Corporation have caught the attention of the UNISA - the United Nations' international security agency - and of famous biographer Haley Voss who wants to write an exposé of the suprisingly youthful-looking tycoon.

Commercial spying has reached new dimensions and the World Bank is concerned that, unrestrained, the Tye Corporation activities could destabilize the world's financial markets.

Then Thomas Tye announces that using a wholly new, benign and sustainable satellite technology he can change the world's weather for the benefit of all. As a demonstration, he promises to bring rain to end decades of drought in Ethiopia and he asks the people of the world to join him in delivering the world's biggest act of philanthropy.

But the output from the satellite technology is exciting the world's super-dense information networks in ways nobody could have foreseen and, as the UN closes in on a corporation with more power than any single nation, a new entity begins to emerge which changes everybody's plans...

Why not post this kind of thing in the appropriate sticky thread? Far more people will see in that way. I see no point whatsoever in starting a new thread, when there's already one there for this specific purpose.

Personally, I prefer it here - easier to see repeats, plus I forget to check the "bargain" threads for days.

The benefit is that you can subscribe to the "bargain" threads, and hence easily see when they have new content.

  1. Flexibility.I prune those sporadically, and almost everything in those tags is still free in at least one venue and region, many for several years, now. You can't do that with a single megathread entry, at least not on this forum's software.
  2. Easier to post repeats, which tend to occur at intervals of at least a year from the publishers who still give us stuff, these days.

Most of the megathreads get locked after they rotate. You can't click Edit to retrieve and then copy-paste the info from an old post after that, not without having to redo any formatting and all the links. And if you want to quote a locked post, you have to manually construct the quote with the poster's name and the appropriate post reference number, since the forum software will no longer do it for you with 1-click.

Maybe some members would be willing to go through that extra effort. Personally, I wouldn't bother.
  3. Personal preference.

This is the way I myself prefer to see free ebooks posted, so this is how I do it.

All MR members are free to post whatever they wish to share, in whichever manner they please, within the bounds of the forum rules. If someone wishes to see things shared in a particular way, well, there's an obvious corollary to that.

I often look at the Deals RSS feed from Firefox, and all these posts from ATDrake show up there, but if there's a way to get a RSS feed from a specific thread, I'm not aware of it.

Who said anything about email? Just click "User CP", and the first screen you get shows you your subscribed threads with updates.

Which means one must come here... instead of just scanning the RSS feed. Which doesn't show the new items in a thread, anyway.

I agree. I have missed bargains before, just like I missed this one. I see a lot of christian and romance here which I don't read so I forget to check. Oh well.
