Just finished listening to John Scalzi's "The Dispatcher", which was an Audible freebie last October. Has a noir-ish feel. And an interesting premise - that 999 out of 1000 times, if a person is murdered, they pop back, naked but otherwise in whatever physical state they'd been in a few hours before their death. Kind of mind-bending to have that plot twist going on in a story that had that gum-shoe feeling. I liked it, and I'm now disappointed to find out it's a standalone. I was hoping it was an intro to a new series!

Yeah, but there's nothing worse than cold cockles! I looked up what cockles are, you REALLY don't want that!

Or perhaps he means to hard boil the cockles of his heart, though how to boil the cockles without boiling the whole heart, I don't know.

I recommend Adam Hall's Quiller series with it's tense, tough as nails suspense, beautifully narrated and expertly crafted plots. Quiller is the main protagonist, a cynic, too-proud professional, with a chip on his shoulder against his employers.

I saw it posted in the sleuths thread: maybe Burke's Dave Robicheaux series?

Although I also am pretty late to this thread, crazy busy at work right now, I recommend Marvin Albert's Stone Angel series, with a half-French/half-American PI who lives in the south of France. Although the PI, Pete Sawyer (or Pierre-Ange Sawyer in French, which also translates to Stone-Angel in English, hence the series name) isn't perhaps as world-weary as some, they are first person, there's a bit of violence (and NO recipes!) in each, and the gumshoes are pretty worn.
I am perhaps a little biased towards this series because I am a huge Francophile, but it's one of my top five favorite series. Seven of the nine titles are available in ebook from Wildside Press; hopefully the last two will show up someday. And, just checking, I assume you find Robert B. Parker's Spenser to be too in-touch with his feelings? and with Susan Silverman? Although I'm less enthused about some of the later titles, which (to me, at least) started feeling a little formulaic, I quite like the earlier titles, some of which were finalists for Shamus awards, so can't be too wimpy ![]() Last edited by sufue; 07-31-2017 at 07:39 AM. |

That was just before I pried his fingers slowly from the rail of the cruiseship from which he was hanging. I didn't understand what he meant, I doubted he would ever need a heart transplant. After I watched him fall silently into the water, I went back to the ballroom, I had a double malt scotch waiting for me. Last edited by GlenBarrington; 07-31-2017 at 12:50 PM. |
