Not a novel but "the black lizard big book of pulp" is good. Over 1k pages of pulp stories in one file.

I think I have everything edited by Otto Penzler. I think I bought that back in the days when my Sony 500 was new.

An absolutely SUPERB collection of noir, crime, hard-boiled classic short stories, novelettes, and novellas.

A HUGE collection!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I'm 25% into "Tokyo Doll," by John McPartland.

This was the 'winning' recommended title that I chose to read.

I'm enjoying it immensely. It has that wonderful, old hard-boiled feel to it -- because it is precisely that!

A little off the beaten track, but if you like a nice world-weary hard-boiled detective, you might check out the story "Chase" that is included in Strange Highways from Dean Koontz. In his colorful writing career, he created some pretty decent characters. Of course, you'll probably skip over the story "Bruno," about another hard-drinkin' detective who finds a collaboration with a dimension-traveling investigator--who happens to also be a bear, but you shouldn't hold that against him--is a good way to solve certain problems. But if you do skip it, you'll never know just what you are missing.

I've decided the thread title is odd and somewhat perverted. Dr. Dib wants to hard boil a book to then use it to rub it against his cockles to warm them up. Just eeewww!

So given the thread title and what Dr. Dib wants to do, I think a hardcover book might be best.
