Borrow library books directly from Onyx?
Is it feasible to borrow library books (that uses Adobe's scheme) without using a computer?
Another way to ask the question could be if Bluefire Reader, Aldiko and/or ADE for android works on the Onyx? |

With my old device (s. sig, not android) it was possible to read EPUBs from my library. It worked with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 on my PC, then I could put file on the reader and read it with the pre-installed app. Best thing about it, at the time, was that the file remained readable on the reader, after the borrowing period from the library had expired and on the PC I could not read it anymore after that.
Basically I have no answer to the question. I guess, Adobe Digital Editions works on the Onyx Boox android devices, but I can't remember reading about this. Last edited by tommyer; 07-24-2017 at 06:01 PM. |

I'd say that Onyx reader with Carta screens have full Adobe DRM support, while devices with new Carta+ screens have partial Adobe DRM support - excluding the Snow Field function.
Onyx Neo Reader (1) - one of the standard apps - can open epub and pdf files with Adobe DRM copy protection. Just enter your Adobe ID and password in system settings and put the files in the Books folder. However you can't enjoy the latest Snow Field function in this app. The function reduces ghosting on Carta+ screens. Onyx Int. should be working on a way to include Adobe DRM support in their Onyx Neo Reader 2, but that can take quite some time... Last edited by Mage3; 07-25-2017 at 02:34 PM. |

Thanks, maybe I should clarify.
My question isn't regarding if the onyx can hande adobe drm for reading books. That I'm sure it can do (as pretty much any e-reader (besides Kindle) can). What I'm curious about is if the Onyx, as an android device, can accept an ascm-file from a library site, decode it and fetch the book. Apps like Aldiko and Bluefire reader can do those things. They are android apps. Onyx is running Android. But, many apps doesn't handle e-ink very well, and many need newer android versions that v4. It would be very helpful if someone with an Onyx could go to the play store, see if they can install Aldiko and/or Bluefire reader and if they seem to function ok on e-ink. You just save your Adobe ID and password in system settings, then open the default browser, go to the website you want and download a book. For me, it was OK with both direct links to epub files and downloading with ascm links. In both cases you get a file you can open in any reading app that has Adobe DRM support. I stick to Onyx Neo Reader. As for 3rd party apps, it's usually better not to be overoptimistic. I'll try to test Aldiko and/or Bluefire reader tomorrow, but I expect that they won't look very nice on the b/w EInk screen. |

If your library uses OverDrive you could always try using either the regular OverDrive app or their Libby app and not mess with a third party reader app at all. IIRC the other library providers also have their own reader apps as well.
