No, don't change out the reading material! That'll just encourage them to stay longer. Make it be 1954 dictionaries, or something.

Me too because I tried a glasses charity drive earlier this year and the people there couldn't get my vision corrected but they just use printed out cards and have you try various donated glasses It's not real doctors.

I have a astigmatism in my left eye. I suspected that was the problem.

Astigmatism is difficult to correct with standard lenses, it's not just a matter of of the strength of the lens, but also the axis (tilt) of the correction. That means not just one correction, but two that must match. It's very unlikely that donated glasses would have both correct.

That's what I suspected which is why I'll go to the discount eyeglasses place in November. I'd got my first pair there before. This was in 93 they were $40 for everything back then now it's $80. The ones I have are from Sears Optical. I paid over $200 for everything back in 2007.

I usually get mine from COSTCO, I find their prices a good as anyone's. They don't do the prescriptions though, I get that from my HMO.

Once you have a prescription, http://zennioptical.com is liked a whole lot by several of us at my office, and now my brother too. You can't try them on, of course, but you can upload a photo and see how they might look. So if you aren't too picky, you can get plain glasses for ... $25 or $30?

I've been very happy with Zenni.
Depending our needs, we use either Zenni or Costco.

Hearing is just the opposite. While I can't reach the 21 KHz frequency anymore like I could 20 years ago in my teens, my hearing is still sharp enough to hear a pin drop across the room (on a tile floor). I can also hear coil whine in some TV's, hear lights buzzing, and 'extremely quiet' computers often sound like a autumn storm to me.

Nowadays, software often barely fits in 1920x1080. My laptop runs at 150%, and the screen effectively is 1280x720... where my 10 year old laptop was 1280x800 at 100%. Yes, the newer laptop is technically sharper, but back then, software and websites actually WORKED WELL in a 1280x800 space.
I have to agree with you on this one. I do not understand the appeal of grey font on websites. I understand (don't like, but understand) that they're designing everything for tablets with great resolution nowadays - making everything way too big for my normal laptop screen. But why the heck would they think lightening the font was a good idea?!

It's everywhere.

Tiny, thin, and grey fonts are the norm nowadays. Sometime ago my e-mail program (AquaMail; best mail program on Android since years, IMHO) updated, and it was nigh unreadable. Browsing the settings revealed a new option: "Use thin modern fonts", which was enabled by default. It made the fonts really thin and grey. Disabling it brought the normal fonts back again. I'm just glad they provided the option.

The fonts in the "Device" settings panel for the Ubiquiti access point I mentioned earlier in the thread a thin, grey, and tiny. And that is with the laptop screen already set to 150%, as I can't read 1920x1080 on 15.6 inch...

The reviewers describe the Ubiquiti AP software as "USer friendly and looking modern." I'd describe is as bog slow, and hard to read because of a tiny interface.

I still wonder why interfaces need to be so small nowadays, and half the stuff is hidden in side panels (under non-descript buttons), where software 15 years ago just used crystal clear menu options, and displayed a large dialog in the middle of the screen. But that's... old... I guess.

Blame Google for the minimalist look of "modern" UIs. They're the ones that started it, and is seems like everyone else is piling on.

I too have trouble with the low contrast look, and have to blow up my screen so that few pages fit the width and I have to scroll side to side as well as up and down. And forget about being able to see the slider on the scroll bars.

Sympathies. It's no fun trying to find a replacement stylist - even temporarily.
