1980s style bean bags were great: very unstructured and squashy. All the ones I've seen recently have been shaped in some way.
I'm fine at getting up and down, but it's been a few years since I did any yoga, so my muscles have stiffened up.
These looks pretty similar to what we had in the 80's

A quick look on amazon found a load that were similar, can you find a picture anywhere of something similar to what you are after, because these look like the bean bag we had?

I used to use backrest pillows, but always leaning against a headboard, wall, etc. I don't know how well they would stay in place with no leaning support. but take a look at these images:

I would buy this for the £17.99 price because the seller has a good track record and is in the UK.
That is super cute! I hope it works out for you.

Not a beanbag but looks like it would be comfortable enough.
They're called moon chairs in the UK and a quick scan of Amazon.co.uk seems to indicate they're double the price of the beanbag the OP got. I personally find them uncomfortable along with deckchairs and suspended [hammock] chairs because I find the front bar of the seat digs into the back of my thighs, also I need to have my feet up because I get cramp in my knees if I'm not careful.

I prefer a proper lounger (preferably off the ground as sometimes I struggle to get upright) or something like a moon rocker: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garden-1918...rds=moon+chair. The only problem I have with them is that I tend to slip down the chair so I find I have to prop it up so it doesn't rock (one of those plastic step stools works really well for that)

The bean bag has arrived in amazing time: just one day after ordering. But the weather has changed! It's pouring down in B'ham!

The bag itself seems like a great size for leaning against, but too small for an adult to sit on. Hopefully, the weather will change again and I'll be able to tell you the results of actual use.

Hopefully, the further suggestions given will help others looking for comfortable garden reading. The large size of bean back mentioned by pdurrant looks interesting for sitting on.
I deliberately avoided cord, or other material with a pile, because cat fur sticks to it and is hard to remove. Cotton/polyester is much easier in this respect.

I just hope the British summer returns.

I thought that was a British summer

Coming from a beautiful sunny winters day here. Only 16ºC, but no wind, so quite nice in the sun. Of course, I'm inside, lazing in a very comfortable lounge chair with my laptop and the TV on.

Fingers crossed, both for better weather and that it works as wanted.

I managed to try it out for a few minutes between showers of rain this afternoon. It's perfect in terms of size and comfort, but the colour is far more intense than in the Amazon picture. But as the cover is washable, I imagine that it will fade; the sun may have this effect also (what sun? I hear other Britons ask).

All I need now is a warm day WITHOUT rain to make full use of it, otherwise I've just bought the cats a new bed!!

There's always next year!

You mean I jinxed it by buying a bean bag in anticipation of a long hot summer. Hubris, maybe?

It's like taking a portable roof to work - 99% of the time you don't need it, so of course the day you forget to pick it up when you leave the house you end up needing it... Or when you're wearing sandals, of course you step on a loose paving stone and get wet feet.

Pardon my ignorance, but what on earth is a "portable roof"?

Until Harry asked this question I thought it was an English thing.
