For me (and everyone is different) ice needs to be a certain consistency to chew. Just making cubes in the freezer doesn't cut it for me. They are too large and too hard. Bagged ice is 'softer", I guess you would say. They crumble as you bite down on them. It's a mouth feel thing for me.
Apparently Sonic makes amazing chewing ice. The company that the ice machine for the restaurant has actually come out with a home model. It was more pennies than I could afford though! The one I got isn't bad though. As long as I'm eating the ice out of the machine it's a nice soft ice. If I collect it and put it in my freezer then I need to leave it sitting out in a cup for about 10 minutes to let it soften back up.
Yup, I'm weird! Actually, ice chewing is a symptom of anemia. I do eat plenty of beef, but I can't take iron tablets or liquid. It just makes my stomach sooo sick. So chewable ice it is!

Yes, I have a freezer. It even came with an ice maker and water dispenser. The original owner obviously used it as there were white marks in the tray when we got it. Our water is so hard out here that you really need a whole house water filtration system. So we took out the ice maker. We also don't use that much ice. Hubby just makes his own in water bottles. If we need a lot of ice, we just get it from the water mill along with our water.
We did think about getting a countertop ice maker. We didn't for 3 reasons. One was I don't have much room to store ice in the freezer. 2 was the power usage. 3 was the cost factor.
Anyway hope that answers your why we don't make ice here.

Yes. We also have a Penguin but they are more expensive and are not well maintained.

Well, hell...it must be hard, catching those little guys, shipping them all the way from the Antarctic...and why wouldn't they be well-maintained? Altho, I guess it's pricey to keep a nice freezing swimming tank and snow/ice on the ground for them, there in TX. And the fish..yeah, I guess it could add up. Poor widdle guys.

It took me nearly two hours, but I've finally manage to set up my Sonos on my friends's network. I had to doa factory reset and a fresh set up before it wanted to connect. Hopefully when I go home in three weeks I don't have to do another factory reset.

But the thinking behind is sound, I think: What is the best way to preserve data in a way that it possible can be read in 100 years? In a stupid .txt file, wrapped with some xml. It is based on the 'SIARD' standard. (Software Independent Archiving of Relational Databases). But when you have a table with 17 million rows, 44 columns, you get a .xml file with 17 * 44 million lines. + some overhead. I have a file from another table, that is like this, but only with 13 million rows. That one is 25GB. So I think this one will nearing the 30gb, when sql-server is finished writing it, in a couple of days. :-)

Judging by SIARD (Software Independent Archiving of Relational Databases) from the US Library of Congress, I don't think what you are dealing with is quite what the spec has in mind...

You did, but I don't. I don't normally place bets, let alone accept them.

Ya gotta wonder. I truly don't know if the field simply attracts oddballs, or whackos, or what. Or if it's simply that the advent of the Internet has exposed all of us to people we never--never--would have encountered, in our normal day-to-day lives. But now? Sure. Now, they don't just exist, they thrust themselves into our reality.

I had conversation with a friend a few years ago. She was a former executive editor at a trade publisher who is now a full time writer, and we were discussing the state of publishing and the misconceptions surrounding it (like how cheaply a book can be priced.)

She said "The problem is, we're smart, and we surround ourselves with other people who are smart, so we're insulated. We don't realize that an awful lot of people out there aren't smart until we have to deal with them."

She's spot on. I've lost track of the number of things that are glaringly obvious to me that elude some folks I deal with. In some cases, it's a matter of not wanting to get it, because the concept is one that flies against their preconceptions and they don't want to believe it. In others, they simply can't get it. They just aren't bright enough to grasp the notion.

Both types seem to emerge from the woodwork where self-publishing is concerned.
