I probably know the answer to this but: Can you use the superpoints to pre-order a book at kobo?

It's a minor annoyance, but it's still irritating. I got a promotion from Kobo today headed, "Hey, girl. Your eyes should be on these books."
Granted, I'm of the female persuasion, but I ceased to be a girl a long time ago. Is Kobo promoting books to men with the header, "Hey, boy. Your eyes should be on these books"? Why do I think it's highly unlikely ( i.e., flatly impossible)? And in these days of people who identify as transgender, bigender or agender, is this really a productive marketing theme? Why go out of your way to seem insensitive? |

It must take a lot of effort for Kobo to be as wrong-headed as it is. I don't think they can be gender-profiling, as I don't read anything that would be typecast as "women's books," which would be a colossally stupid and offensive assumption to make about a customer anyway. And while my first name is typically female, "Brian" isn't! And many names are gender neutral.
Why, Kobo? |

Yup, my husband and I both got the same "Hey girl" email. We were equally puzzled that anyone thought that was a good idea. It sounds condescending no matter what gender you identify as. It would only work with a friend who you knew would take it as a joke. Even then you might wanna think twice.

Maybe it's a clever way of selecting the right audience to actually click on the links:
These books are people who don't mind being called "girl". Or maybe not. |

Their analytics can't possibly be that advanced when they can't even verify working promo codes.

I also got the email with hey girl. I wondered how Kobo would determine my gender because my name there is No Way. I looked at my account and you can give them your gender but it's optional. I don't know how they got that info because if I didn't have to give it I wouldn't have. If it was required I usually choose male.

My assumption would be this popular meme: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/people/ryan-gosling
Although, if they don't include Ryan Gosling in it, it doesn't make much sense. Oh, Kobo. ![]() ![]() |
