Since Nougat you do want more space because updates will be done in a separate partition. When everything is ready you reboot and the partition with the update will become active. This is on phones shipped with Nougat, so if the phone you get ships with Marshmallow it won't have the extra partition taking up space.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying--are you talking about updates to Android, or to apps in general?--but both of these have Nougat. The Moto G has 7.0 and the Moto E has 7.1.

Sorry, it's updates to Android. Basically what happens is there are two system partitions which means two times the space needed for the OS. This partitioning is not required for the different manufacturers, but since it's possible you should count on losing space.

Edit: I'm currently using a Moto G4 plus, and it lists 9.49 gb used for Android OS.

Thanks. My 1st gen Moto E is only 4gb, so 16gb sounds like a lot to me, but I guess it's really not.

In plain English, 16GB is not enough. Not even close. 32GB might be enough, might not (depending on what you plan to do with the phone). 64GB should be enough. My iPhone 6s is 64Gb and it's enough.

My phone runs Marshmallow and 16gb of onboard storage plus a 64gb mSD card is plenty for my needs. I download my music and audiobooks to the card and save the onboard for apps.

Unlike iphone you can expand memory with SD card

and android knows how to manage the extra space. The 2GB RAM is would I would look at. 3GB and up is better, especially for heavy games etc.
If you're just planning on streaming and a regular user (the older cellphone suggests that) 2GB should more than enough.

The moto G has far better specs (processor 8 core 2.0 vs 4 core 1.4, 12MP camera vs 8MP) and will last longer for future OS updates. If you run out of space just add a microSD card, better for saving pics/videos anyway.

You can get by with the moto-E if you really want, but I'd say an SD card from the start would be advisable.

Looks like the 32gb Moto G5 Plus is sold out in the Amazon lockscreen version; I can't convince myself to go up to $180 for the 64gb one, though it's probably a great deal.

This takes the pressure off to choose something today. I'll go back to the drawing board.

I don't want to go over $150, since I don't use my phone for much of anything. I would just like to have a little bit of room to load a few apps.

I just recently had to replace my suddenly dead LG G3, and I needed a phone in hand right away, so I got the unlocked Moto G 5 Plus at the nearest Best Buy. I wound up going for the 64GB version primarily because of the extra RAM (and because the guy knocked a few bucks off) but with my 32GB SD card moved from the LG, the 32 would have been plenty for my storage needs.
But I think for some degree of future proofing, the 64GB is definitely worth what Amazon is asking today.
I wonder how intrusive the ads are on the Prime exclusive models?
I hope pretty intrusive so I don't feel too bad about paying so much more for the regular one.
