What does it mean when a book has a DOC label?

Firmware 5.8.? List view

I'm just curious

It means it's a "personal document" rather than a book.

DOC == (Personal) Doc(ument) == Anything you did not buy from Amazon.

{Yes, you caught that one I bet. As if anything you do buy from Amazon is not a "Personal Document" (personal property) by right of purchase. They would like you to think it is still theirs.}

That's odd. I have lots of stuff not from Amazon, e.g. public domain books from feedbooks and MR, and they don't have the DOC label.

Do you send your books to your Kindle with Calibre? By default, it sends files which are "books", not "documents". The difference is in the metadata.

There you go, you have discovered another one of the things I do not do.
I don't pass my choice of reading matter through Amazon's hands.
<rant>
I grew up in a semi-rural, small town where the public school did not have a library.
The county sent a bookmobile around once a week or once every other week.
The interior was marked off in 'grade levels' and the supervising librarian would not let you even browse in the 'wrong' grade level section.
Even so, you had to let the librarian standing at the door look through each book you wanted to take out.

By the year that third grade started, I had enough of that interference with my choice of reading matter.
I went through the chain of command (mother -> teacher -> assistant principal) and got written, signed, permission to chose my own books from anywhere in the bookmobile, without passing them through the hands of the guards at the doors.
The first time I used my written permission, the librarian in charge called my teacher down and had her verify the letter and the signatures.

Even now, about 64 years later, I don't like the idea of passing my personal choice of books through Amazon's hands any more than I liked passing my choice of books through the hands of the guard at the door.

Looking back at the situation from over a 1/2 century, the cold war had just gone through its biggest public 'red scare' with Joseph McCarthy's years in office.
And he would lend his name to a term that was not, then, commonly used to describe such situations: McCarthyism.
https://www.britannica.com/topic/McCarthyism

I didn't like even implied McCarthyism when I was in the second and third grade.
I still don't.
If I want to read 'subversive' (or any other kind of) materials, it is no business of the librarian guarding the door, Joe McCarthy or Amazon.

Oh, the potentially subversive materials I wanted to check out where the children's science fiction by Robert Heinlein.
Which Amazon will now a-days gladly send to your Kindle, just give them some money.
</rant>

Knc1 is not the only one who had to go over a librarian's head because the librarian thought she knew best. Except in my case, the principal went with me to talk to the librarian.

None of that is of the slightest relevance to this thread. We're discussing sideloaded books, which do not go "through Amazon's hands".

I asked the OP if he uses Calibre to send his books to the Kindle. That has nothing whatsoever to do with the "Send to Kindle" application. Calibre (by default, anyway) sends books via a USB connection.

All my books are side-loaded because I don't have wi-fi, but none of them have DOC beside them.

All my books are put in Calibre, then sent from calibre to kindle, usually through USB (This is the case with the book under discussion). I have de-DRM plugins installed so any DRM is automatically removed.

I don't know why this book in particular has a DOC label and others don't. The other oddity is kindle sometimes loses reading progress for this book so when I open it, it goes to the end, a blank page.
