Hi everyone. I have a jailbroken Kindle Voyage on 5.8.1. I've been notified of an update, presumably to 5.8.9.2.
I read the first post stating it should survive, but wondering if someone can confirm if it's safe to update. Thank you. |

It is safe. You will have to reinstall Mrpi and any hacks.

To the other poster, trying to find help. In the meantime, you might try the search function with tarball Mac. |

Mac person here! Firstly, in Finder, Preferences, Advanced, checkmark "show all filename extensions" so that you can SEE the real file type. Your text for this option might be different, if your OS is not the version mine is, but it should be very similar to this.
Next, make your web browser stop opening zip files. We want the file to STAY zipped. If you are using Safari: Open Safari. Click Preferences. Under the General tab, UNcheck the option 'Open “safe” files after downloading'. If you use Firefox: when you download the file and get a dialog window, choose SAVE file instead of OPEN WITH. You don't want the zip file to be opened. Just save it as is, please. (Or, if you don't get this window, you'll have to first change your Firefox preferences for downloads, temporarily. Ask again, and I'll look up where.) Once your ***.gz file STAYS a .gz file (i think that's what it is?) then the Kindle's "upgrade" function should be able to see it when you copy it over there, and it will allow you to "Update Your Kindle". Holler again if I haven't hit the actual problem. |

If you DO have a file named *.bin, but the kindle isn't letting you "update this kindle" .... are we sure it's the RIGHT bin file? They only work for the correct model, so having the wrong one may give this same problem. |

I have the kindle plugged in and am copying the bin file over to it. I know it is the correct bin based on the file name. Once that's done, based on past performance, after unplugging and letting the kindle boot up, it will ask me to start updating it with stuff like connecting to wifi before I get to a menu screen. Is this correct, that I will have do to some of the personalization? Last edited by jangell2; 07-09-2017 at 10:59 AM. |

On this go around, the Kindle wasn't registered, so a did that, which required setting up on wifi, and still the update function is greyed out. I plug in kindle, copy bin file to it, eject kindle and go to update and it's greyed out. I plug in kindle and see that bin file is missing. Now I'm really confused. I've got a disappearing bin file.
I copied it over again using finder. The copy completes, I see the bin file in the root directory at same level as "documents". I eject the kindle and unplug. Without doing anything else, I plugged kindle back in, it's recognized in finder and the bin file is gone. It seems the bin disappears as soon as the kindle is ejected. In step #3 it says I can validate the bin file with the txt file. How would I do that? Don't understand that one at all. Last edited by jangell2; 07-09-2017 at 11:19 AM. |

Check the "Device Info" panel under 'Settings' menu. The "initial_factory_*.bin" files are not model locked, even if you had the wrong file for your model, it would let you (attempt) to install it. # 14 0 14 - and I am gone again. You say that the process would allow me tot try updating the kindle, even though it won't work. My experience as listed above, is that it won't even let me try, since updating is always greyed out. |

I said they where not model locked, meaning if you had a file for a different model, it would still let you try to install it (if running a jailbreakable firmware). I did not say that 5.8.8 and 5.8.9 would allow you to do it. |

Is there a way to downgrade the FW? I know there's a way to prevent automatic updating, just can't find it. I could stop further updates and hope the jailbreak is eventually updated. Last edited by jangell2; 07-09-2017 at 01:41 PM. |

I found the directory name that is added to prevent OTA updates. I've added that and it is surviving so far.
I found the different FW files in the first post and tried adding the bin for 5.8.7 to the kindle and when I eject it, I get a message saying an invalid update has been added and it gets deleted. I guess to do this, the kindle must be jailbroken but to jailbreak it, it can't be at my FW level. Rock and a hard stone I guess. I hope the directory name prevents any further updating and I can come back in the future and maybe I'll find jailbreak has been updated to work on my kindle. Would a reset return me to 5.8.7.0.1, which is what I originally had? Last edited by jangell2; 07-09-2017 at 01:55 PM. |

No.
All that does is erase everything you put onto the Kindle. And be careful you don't bust another gut over this, it isn't worth it. |

It appears to me the Amazon is upping the ante on it's efforts to prevent 3rd parties from installing their own software. |
