Author Fields - How to Cut Down on the Typing?

I have some kind of hand and arm injuries. Typing hurts. I wonder if there's any way to fill the author field without worsening my hand and arm injuries in my good hand and arm.

Because of the variety of name formats, I use FN LN everywhere.

Most articles lack author metadata. Copying the author data from the article often involves cutting footnotes and replacing commas with &. In especially nasty cases, it involves retyping a series of ln, fn, ln, fn, etc. names.

Many books have author metadata but in ln, fn.

Many books Anglicize Latin or 'Ellenic author names.

Is there any solution?

P.S. For the time being, I use "Various Authors" as a placeholder.

The Quality Check plug-in will easily fix several of your issues. You might also assign a Calibre shortcut to those menu selections.

When I import them, most books have names, but most articles have "Unknown" under "Author." I haven't found any menu selections that fix names when there are names. And how would "Quality Check" help?

@MarjaE - I find editing file names in my file manager easier than editing columns in calibre, especially if it involves cutting and pasting from elsewhere. As you suggest this is common for journal articles, blog clips, non-ebook files, etc.

So, when I want to add books that have missing (or incorrect) embedded author(s) and/or titles, I ensure Preferences->Add Books->Read metadata from file contents rather than file name setting is unchecked.

I should add, I use Windows, and more importantly several 3rd party utilities that facilitate this approach.
