Thanks for letting me know that if I add 950 pages to my 50 page document of handwritten notes and design sketches for my current project, the document will still be handled quickly! ;-)

For me, performance is critical. If the device is slow, I tend not to use it as much. With the RPT1, I find myself using it more and more. The lightness of the device makes it a pleasure to carry around. I should get my case soon, so I'll feel more comfortable about leaving the house with it.

Sorry you're not happy, Juegos. Maybe you would be happier with an Apple iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. Apple makes excellent hardware and software.

I need an eInk tablet. The number 1 eInk tablet on on my list now is the reMarkable tablet - it has similar hardware and all the features that the DPT-RP1 lacks (navigation, internet, cloud integration, epub support and so on) but the drawback is its 10.3 screen instead of the DPT-RP1's 13.3. I will have to see how that works out with documents in A4 format (e.g. with a smart margin-cropping feature). Until it's released I'll be using the DPT S1.

I think people are deluding themselves with the Remarkable tablet. How often do stylus based e-readers really work well coming from small companies? I have to admit their marketing is good, however.

Why do you need an eInk tablet? I'm not clear on why you couldn't just use an iPad Pro.

It's up to you, of course, but I'm just not willing to give up that much screen real estate, no matter what they do with cloud integration. But, you know, I work with two 29" monitors all day, LOL.

I could probably write the iOS app to allow PDFs to be transferred back and forth with the RP1, but I'm sure Sony has plenty of smart programmers who could do the same thing. I hope they do it, it would be a killer feature.

Always having to carry your Windows/Mac laptop with you to get documents on the DPT-RP1 feels very constraining, particularly when you realize you're walking around with >$3000 worth of devices all the time (a mobile phone which I can't use to get documents on the DPT-RP1, a Macbook Pro, and a DPT-RP1).

Certain features such as navigation/keyboard may be added in future firmware updates. I doubt this however, given that the predecessor DPT-S1 was sporadically updated (with minor things), Sony deliberately removed these features (the DPT-S1 had them), and Sony hasn't bothered adding these features within 2 weeks after the DPT-RP1's release (which is when people decide to keep the device or return it).

What is certainly out of the question is that internet access - and cloud integration - will happen on the DPT-RP1. The DPT-S1 had internet and cloud integration, but the DPT-RP1 is totally locked down with the Digital Paper App and Sony's network security certificates (which Sony spent a year on developing). You can't even drag-and-drop from the file explorer to the device anymore - only through the App on your laptop can you access the device.

Given the hardware improvements (particularly the faster Carta screen) the DPT-RP1 would have been a great device if it had the DPT-S1's software. A pity!
The Sony reps have already stated they are fixing some of the navigation issues. Sorry that it didn't come fast enough for you. Your negativity is astounding. Give yours back already and save us the same old tired dialog a million times over.

Judge the the writing experience yourself from these videos, the reMarkable's latency is at 50ms-60ms right now.

Like most people on this forum, I prefer reading on eInk. As a scientist I sometimes read more than 50 student papers per day. I prefer reading them - and returning them to sender - on the spot as soon as students send them. This is possible with the DPT S1 (and reMarkable) but not with the DPT-RP1 unless I carry my laptop with me at all times.

I hope the engineers at Sony read this forum, and think, yes, we could write a little iPhone app to transfer documents to the RP1.

It's not a matter of just writing a 'little iPhone app' to drag-and-drop files. The current Digital Paper App that you need on a Windows/Mac laptop to get files on the DPT-RP1 is installed in a very particular way as a networking protocol with corresponding network security certificates from Sony (hence why people have trouble installing it).

The whole point of this is to lock the DPT-RP1 down (e.g. to satisfy lawyers with sensitive documents) - you can't even drag-and-drop files on it through the file explorer.

Hence you can't just write a 'little iPhone app' with these features - unless your iPhone is jailbroken or Android phone is rooted you can't even mess with the network protocols in such ways. Hence why Sony has not - and will not - release an app for mobile phones. It's simply not possible and goes against the whole philosophy of the DPT-RP1 (being an extremely locked down device in comparison to the DPT-S1).

Just because the Digital Paper App works in a certain way with the RP1 to transfer files does not mean that an iPhone app would have to work the same way. I'm sure a solution could be devised that relied on the security features inherent in the iPhone, such as the thumb print, which is used for Apple Pay.

I think that you, and all of us, don't know enough to make any pronouncements regarding what is or is not possible.

I think you might be on to something. Wouldn't it be an interesting challenge to give it a try? Show Sony's engineers how it should be fine from the start. An added benefit would also be that we could base our discussion on facts and not assumptions.

I don't know their code base, and have no access to its internals. Frankly, I don't have the time, and I don't work for free. The rent must be paid. ;-) See my username.

Don't forget Sony produces its own phone (Xperia) and has 7100 employees working on that. They know how to write mobile phone apps - let alone a file transfer app - but didn't develop 1 for the DPT-RP1.

You don't think every DPT-RP1 user out there would be happy to pay? I can only speak for myself, but if there was a transfer available from a phone I would be on it like white on rice, or brown on...

@Avenger, seriously. everyone should be able to express their opinion, even if no one agrees with it. you are saying that @juegos should just give it up since he's being so negative about it. if this is the norm, then this whole fora would be full of positive sentiments about all products. so nothing needs to be improved? so no innovation? no competition?

please respect the opinions of others and their right to express them.
