Blood of the Oak is the fourth and most recent in the Duncan McCallum series by Elliot Pattison. It has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Oak-Mys...dp/B01C6D0KLM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2016

The year is 1765, at the beginning of the Stamp Tax dissent, the first organized resistance to English rule. Duncan McCallum is drawn into the mystery of a series of murders and kidnappings that are strangely connected to the theft of an Iroquois artifact. In following the trail, he uncovers a network of secret runners supporting the nascent “committees of correspondence,” engaged in the first organized political dissent across colonial borders. When he is captured and thrown into slavery with the kidnapped runners, Duncan encounters a powerful conspiracy of highly placed English aristocrats who are bent on crushing all dissent. Inspired by an aged Native American slave and new African friends, Duncan decides not just to escape but to turn their own intrigue against the London lords.

The fourth entry in the Bone Rattler series moves ever closer to the beginning of the American Revolution. Included in the novel’s cast of characters are figures who will have their destinies to fulfill in the next decade: Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, the early Pennsylvania rebel James Smith, and Dr. Benjamin Rush. Blood of the Oak takes a fresh view on the birth of the new American nation, suggesting that the “freedom”
that became the centerpiece of the Revolution was uniquely American, rising not only from unprecedented political discourse but also from the extraordinary bond with the natural world experienced by frontier settlers and native tribes.

Emergency in the Pyrenees is the 5th in the Julia Probyn series by Ann Bridge. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Pyr...dp/B005O7VG70/

Spoiler:
Quote:
After the perilous circumstances in which the newly married Julia and Philip met, it is no wonder that the Colonel wants his pregnant wife safe and away from too much excitement. Unfortunately, the remote French mountain village he chooses is not only impractical, isolated, and far from medical assistance, but is unfortunately also in the path of smugglers and saboteurs.

Collin Munro – Julia's cousin and agent for the British Secret Service – arrives on the scene to investigate a threat to the local gasworks, but it is soon clear that once again, it will be down to Julia to solve the mystery, even if she is heavily pregnant.

Emergency in the Pyrenees, book five of the Julia Probyn Mysteries, is rich with intrigue, peril, and humour.

A Healthy Way to Die is the 4th in the Henry Peckover series by Michael Kenyon. It is free right now at Kindle US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
At the sumptuous SimpSon’s SuperSpa thousands of pounds change hands while the rich and corpulent clientele battle to fight the flab.

But pounds that are not of the financial variety are harder to lose, as wheezy members of Millicent Wildwood’s aerobics class soon find out.

So when one hapless participant suddenly drops dead during a particularly arduous stretch and firm exercise no one, at first, suspects murder.

Enter Constable Jason Twitty, ex-Harrovian SuperSleuth, sartorially striking in embroidered bolero and cowboy boots, whose visit is supposed to be purely routine.

But when he has a nasty experience in the jacuzzi, and is warned off the investigation by an unseen attacker, his sleuthing instincts are naturally aroused …

It very soon becomes apparent that some of the SuperSpa’s inhabitants are interested in much more than the pursuit of the body beautiful.

A Sudden, Fearful Death is the fourth title in the William Monk series by Anne Perry. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Sudden-Fearfu...dp/B0042JSO7G/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-sudden-fearful-death

Quote:
In a London hospital, Prudence Barrymore, a talented nurse who had once been one of Florence Nightingale’s angels of mercy in the Crimean War, meets sudden death by strangulation. Private inquiry agent William Monk is engaged to investigate this horrific crime–which intuition tells him was no random stroke of violence by a madman.

Greatly helped by his unconventional friend Hester Latterly, another of Miss Nightingale’s nurses, and barrister Oliver Rathbone, Monk assembles a portrait of the remarkable woman. Yet he also discerns the shadow of a tragic evil that darkens every level of society, and a frightening glimmer of his own eclipsed past.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/shibumi-1

Quote:
A classic spy novel from the bestselling author, Trevanian, about a westerner raised in Japan who becomes one of the world's most accomplished assassins

Nicholai Hel is the world's most wanted man. Born in Shanghai during the chaos of World War I, he is the son of an aristocratic Russian mother and a mysterious German father and is the protégé of a Japanese Go master. Hel survived the destruction of Hiroshima to emerge as the world's most artful lover and its most accomplished -- and well-paid -- assassin. Hel is a genius, a mystic, and a master of language and culture, and his secret is his determination to attain a rare kind of personal excellence, a state of effortless perfection known only as shibumi.

Now living in an isolated mountain fortress with his exquisite mistress, Hel is unwillingly drawn back into the life he'd tried to leave behind when a beautiful young stranger arrives at his door, seeking help and refuge. It soon becomes clear that Hel is being tracked by his most sinister enemy -- a supermonolith of international espionage known only as the Mother Company. The battle lines are drawn: ruthless power and corruption on one side, and on the other... shibumi.

Wow, I almost didn't post this when I stumbled on it because it seems more thriller-ish than mystery-ish, and I don't follow/know much about thriller authors/titles. Glad I did .

If I only tend to read a few thrillers a year, should this be one of them? It's still at $1.99 as of now, so I could still snag it...

The Body in the Moonlight is the 11th in the Faith Fairchild series by Katherine Hall Page. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Minister's wife Faith Fairchild is excited about catering her church's restoration campaign kickoff at historic Ballou House. But when a beautiful young woman dies moments after finishing dessert, Faith is suddenly in serious trouble. Not only is her business in jeopardy -- but Aleford's wagging tongues are suggesting that Faith herself laced the goodie with cyanide, having discovered her husband Tom's perhaps overly pastoral interest in the victim. Faith's world feels steeped in poison and never before have her amateur sleuthing skills been more crucial -- especially when another body is found in the moonlight carrying an unmistakable warning: you're next!

On St Scholastica's Day in February 1355, Oxford explodes in one of the most serious riots of its turbulent history. Fearing for their lives, the scholars flee the city, and some choose the University at Cambridge as their temporary refuge. However, they don't remain safe for long. Within hours of their arrival, the first of their number dies, followed quickly by a second.

When Bartholomew and Brother Michael begin to investigate the deaths, they uncover evidence that the Oxford riot was not a case of random violence, but part of a carefully orchestrated plot. With the Archbishop of Canterbury about to honour Cambridge with a Visitation, and a close colleague accused of a series of murders Bartholomew is certain he didn't commit, the race is on to solve the riddles and bring a ruthless killer to justice.

Although published sixth, The Queen's Man is a prequel to the John Shakespeare series by Rory Clements. I've read a couple of other titles in this series, although not yet this one, and have quite enjoyed them. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US. It is currently sitting at $2.99 at Kobo US, but I'm including the link for price-check purposes. This Kindle edition, which seems to be different (I hate it when they do this) than the one I purchased back in 2014, also supposedly contains a bonus short story.

This should not be confused with the OTHER The Queen's Man, which is the first title in Sharon Kay Penman's excellent (IMO) and far-too-short four-book Justin de Quincy series, one of my top ten favorite series.

England is a Judas nest of conspiracy

It is 1582, and the conflict between Protestant and Catholic threatens to tear the country in two. While Queen Elizabeth I holds the reins of power, there are those whose loyalty lies with her imprisoned cousin, Mary Queen of Scots.

On his first major mission for Sir Francis Walsingham, the young John Shakespeare is ordered to discover a conspiracy to free the Stuart queen from Sheffield Castle. All too soon, he realises that the tentacles of the plot reach deep into his native Warwickshire and threaten his own friends and family. His duty lies with Elizabeth - but how far will he go to protect those he loves?
