This is how boycotts work. Consider this a vocabulary lesson.
So you're going to punish an author for a statement made by the AG, when the author might not be aware of the statement, and might not even know that the Kindle even exists? How exactly is the author supposed to know why he is being boycotted?

Generallly boycotts are accompanied by letter writing and publication of articles. As I recall the catholic boycott of Waldenbooks, there was no ambiguity.

Have you ever listened to Brian Jacques and crew reading aloud Eulalia? It is a real animated wonderful experiance. Also Wrinkle in Time being read aloud by auther. This is way different then the demo I heard of TTS from K2. Both are worthy of value but very different in experiance and should be treated differently.

They did? When? Why? (If I have to ask, then your point is disproved.)

Not worth organizing a boycott over a robot voice, also no point in getting worked up about it until you have it in your hands and see if its worth it

Were you a major stockholder or in management of waldenbooks during the successful boycott?

If you were not, than not only was my point not disproved - you are being obtuse.

I am neither catholic nor much of a Waldenbook customer, but I was certainly aware of the boycott.

I worked for Waldenbooks for years, I didn't know about any boycott

It was 1993 or 1994.

As I recall it was over having porn magazines with the covers displayed, rather than behind the counter or in those opaque plastic slipcovers they now use.

I looked that case up. It didn't get beyond the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. I bet, when I finally find the transcript, that it relies heavily upon Sony vs Universal Studios.

99% of all authors or only American authors? If it's an American association, you can still read books written by the rest of the world

The notion that people would boycott all Authors Guild members because the Guild took a position they didn't like on one issue boggles the mind. All one can say in that case is, so long, and thanks for all the fish.

As a point of information, the Guild stands up for the rights of authors on all kinds of issues. I don't agree with them on every single thing. Why should I expect to? I don't even agree with myself on everything. Nor do I expect all of the membership to have a sophisticated understanding of ebooks and new technologies. (That will come in time, I hope.)

I doubt that the Guild will get much traction on this one. But I don't think it's a bad thing to have an open discussion about it.

A large number of writers belong to the Authors Guild, BTW, but nowhere near 99%, I think.

People who don't realize their actions or positions are unacceptable to their customers get mind boggled when called to account EVERY time.
So no surprise whatsoever.

Since you have absolutely no idea what the positions or actions are of the individual Authors Guild members (except me, since I've stated mine here), I can only speculate as to the recipient of the DUH award.

You might as well say you won't accept a package from UPS because you don't like the position of the Teamsters Union in a contract negotiation.

It's your right, of course. Have at it.

And with that, I am unsubscribing from this devolving thread. I'm sure someone will tell me if anything important happens.

When punishing a group association for actions of that group there is no intellectual or moral obligation to insure that those who chose not to cease participation in said group during the period of it's bad behavior like tha bad behavior they have conjoined themselves to.

Nor does your continued dissemblance and launching of straw men in lieu of addressing the points that myself and other posit to you do you any credit.do you any credit.
