Fingers crossed for the shipping. I preordered from Amazon on June 1st. Initially they were saying it would ship today for mine. Yesterday it changed to shipping on Friday. My card was charged Monday so I’m slightly hopeful

Well, I'm genuinely confused. Does the DPTS1 really have superior software over the DPTR1?

So many people praised the "zen" of working and with the S1 and focusing only on work.

Is this "zen" still present in the R1? Or should I be searching for an S1? Can you even buy them new?

No, Android is a completely different OS which was based on top of Linux. Software is generally not compatible between the two OS due to vastly different libraries and because, indeed, the Android userspace stack is built around Java. It really doesn't matter for us what the OS. But I find it somewhat appalling when uninformed people go around spreading false information and selling their speculations as facts, that's why I wanted to put that straight*.

For what it's worth, it should be easy for you to find out whether the RP1 runs Linux, too. Just check out the Terms & Conditions incorporated into the software. If it's using strict FOSS licenses like the S1 you should also be able to find a similar link to where Sony provides tarballs of the software's sourcecode.

* that was not meant to refer to you but to that specific person who has a long history of doing so

You can connect to the Digital Paper App on your pc only by being on the same wifi network or using bluetooth/usb, so you have to be near it (no internet support).

The confusion is, again, partly due to marketing deception by Sony (just like the battery '3 weeks without charging' statement). They prominently advertise the DPT RP1 with support for cloud services such as Dropbox but do not make it clear that this works only with the Digital Paper App on your PC as an intermediary.

So in fact there is no cloud integration at all as the only way to get documents on the DPT-RP1 is locally through the Digital Paper App on your PC.

Is it possible / easy to sync an annotated pdf from the RP1 back to dropbox? Does it have the same filename or it's automatically renamed ? E.G. If a student puts a pdf in Dropbox can I annotate it and the student can access the annotated version ? Thank you.

One Week DPT-RP1 and bibliography software

A lot of people discussed the pro and cons of cloud syncing and other software decissions by Sony. With my first post in this lovely froum, I just want to add an experience report and want to share my impressions after the first week using the DPT-RP1 and integrating it in my work flow. Perhaps someone is interested.

I have to say, that I'm exclusively reading academic articles on the DPT-RP1 and for that purpose it is doing a good job. Only document navigation and croping features (e.g. for documents with 2 or 3 cloumns) should be improved in the near future. And you should be able the sort the documents in the Folder A to Z or did I miss this "feature"?!

But here is why I ordered the device and why I will keep it:

For several years now, I'm using a bibliography software for literature and knowledge management, and citation. In the database I have currently more than 1.500 pdf files and till now it was just a pain in the a** to develop an integrated workflow. Reading on LCD screens (iPad, PC monitor, ...) didn't work really well, was slow, and exhausting. Conventional e-readers were too small and didn't provide necessary annotations features. Reading on paper – what I'm actually preferring – led to a lot of analog and digital duplicates and a very complicated and time consunimg process to transfer the essential knowledge items and abstracts into the database.

Now the Digital Paper App is syncing the edited documents (and the side notes) with the document folder and can be directly used wtihin the bibliography software environment. Most important, the annotations (highlights) which I made on the DPT-RP1 are recognized by the bibliography software and now can be integrated with two clicks in the knowledge database. This is likely a not intended feature, but I love it. In short words, for the first time in years I'm able to develop an highly integrated work flow of reading documents and processing them for further use.

I know that there are more principal questions about how you should be able to use a digital device you own and Sony isn't and never was a company which appreciates this fact. But besides this the DPT-RP1 with its performance/responsiveness and its single use/distraction free design is doing a great job for my individual needs. I have to admit that from my perspetive(!) there is no other device on the market which can provide this. Even not the 13.3" Android 4.4 e-ink devices like Boox Max or good-e-reader/Netronix – as far as I know the reviews. An open (and outdated) Android OS is providing features I just don't want/need when I just want to read. In summary it's the discussion about if it's a bug or a feature – like in the ReMarkable promotion. For me it's (mostly) a feature, but I can understand why others are annoyed by the software descissions of Sony.

For these reasons I happily spend this sick amount of money for such a limited digital device. I'm just hoping Sony will update the firmware with at least the above mentioned features.

What software are you using?

I am using Mendeley and readcube but the fact that it doesn’t allow automatic creation of folders based on projects is cumbersome.

Mine shipped on Thursday night. It says it should get here on Saturday but I am not positive since they are using a shipping partner to send it to my local post office. I'd rather they use FedEx or UPS on an expensive item like this. Usually they use the shipping partner stuff with smaller items.

Went ahead and cancelled my order. Amazon telling me that I shouldn't expect it to ship until mid July. I ordered June 11th. I'll think about purchasing down the road when they are more readily available and some firmware updates have been released. For my needs there are some things I would like straightened out first. Synching via the digital paper app only will also be a hinderance for me at my place of business.

I have a big issue. My battery only lasts for 2 days. Then I have to charge it. That is crazy. None of you have this issue?

Just to clarify, are you talking about the tablet or the stylus?

For that money you can get an Ipad Pro 12.9" , what are the advantages of a dedicated ebook reader over an Ipad Pro?

Being that you only use your Ipad Pro as a PDF reader, what made you choose the Ipad over the Sony or any other dedicated e-ink reader?
