I've put up my follow up video:

https://youtu.be/QIXmUiU81Ic

I've got a few workarounds I use and talk a bit about why I think Sony made such drastic changes (document security, as has been stated here).

Sync question

So, I've synced Box with one of my Mac computer folders, and synced that folder to Sony Digital App. When I upload a pdf file to the Box folder from my phone, it automatically syncs with the Mac computer folder. But, the pdf file does not appear in my Sony DPT. I've set the Sony Digital App to sync intervals of 10 minutes. What am I missing?

Hmmm, it worked for me. Does the Digital Paper App show that it is connected to the RP1? Did you set up WiFi?

Figured it out. Instead of dragging drop folder from Mac to app, I needed to type in the name of the folder and then open from within the app. Thanks for following up.

In a profession where AOL accounts are not uncommon, security is not the primary concern. Reasonable security is good enough. Convenient, quick access to information is critical. Convenient access means a light device that wirelessly syncs with remote, relevant devices and documents, and can access legal databases and the court's register of actions.

Re security: any U.S. attorney caught violating work-product or attorney-client privilege would lose her/his law license and her/his livelihood. Where the punishment is severe and the advantage questionable, attorney hacking has not been a problem.

Question: The device currently does not allow one to jump straight to a specific pdf page. Is there a plan to add this functionality?

Interesting. Do they have a roadmap of planned features for it?
If not, they should, imo. Would mean a lot with regards to my interest in it.

After a few days I'm not so happy with the battery life. Any further experience of short battery life? What are your use-cases and how long does your RP1 last?

I have to make some remark about that supposed security reason that has been circulated around here.

I don't think, and am actually pretty sure, that the app offers any additional security, whatsoever. If anything, it compromises security because it adds addition attack vectors to the synchronization process. Please consider that the previous solution did not have anything to do with any particular webservice such as "Box.com". It was a generic and safe interface based on the WebDAV spec

http://www.webdav.org/

WebDAV by itsself is built on top of HTTP(S) and as such can (is) already reliably protected against 3rd parties, by SSL/TLS.

Also, many people don't seem to realize that instead of making the synchronization inherently more user friendly, it inherently makes it less user friendly. Since the previous, WebDAV based solution was open, anyone could, with a few clicks depending on their preference of complexity, put a personal WebDAV server onto their computer and thus achieve the exact same amount of convenience (certificates, to my knowledge, could also be installed on the DPT-S1): Any folder on the computer is immediately synchronized with all WebDAV clients and thus the DPT-S1.

There is absolutly no new feature about this app other than it restricts flexibility and users' options severely.

Also, I have repeatedly explained that the Sony DPT-S1 was based on Linux. I have no clue what gives you the idea that it was Android and that the current device has an OS which was "developed from scratch". You don't seem to know the effort and time required to build an "OS from scratch". Sony certainly did not do that and most likely stayed on Linux, also some elements in the UI seem to have been reused.

Maybe they even kept the old WebDAV option? You mentioned something about an undocumented "Control Server" setting. Has anyone ever tried to get this to work? Maybe the software isn't as bad as you all describe it is ;-P

I have asked about Control Server two or three times and nobody has provided any information about it, so I conclude that nobody has a clue what it does or how to use it.

I'm sorry if the notion of writing the operating system from scratch came from me, I said that mainly in jest, and also speculated that they might have switched technologies. Does anybody know for sure which technology was used? Some say Android and some say Linux.

I'm afraid that we just don't know why they changed their approach for the RP1. Maybe too many users were flummoxed at typing in a port number for the WebDAV interface, I don't know.

As far as I know, It's "ManDay" who is mistaken and has repeatedly spread wrong information about the DPT-S1 in the past. See a few pages back where he has already made that claim w/o sources despite evidence to the contrary. Better don't take his/her word for anything.

My Amazon order now says shipping today. I'll let you know if it really ships. I ordered June 9th. From some article which I can't remember, I always thought the DPT-S1 used Linux. Anyway, I'm glad to see that question answered by Sony on Amazon that they will add some more PDF navigation features.

Blurry?

It may be just me, but after using the DPT for a few days, my eyes don't seem to take too well to the screen. I'm not sure if it's because of the screen itself or because of the slightly pixelated fonts. I have no problem reading from my kobo aura one. Thinking of returning this otherwise nice device.

What this poet wanted to say with this link?

In the interest of everyone - all these Sony Android based tablets are listed along Digital Paper at the same site:
http://oss.sony.net/Products/Linux/T...ategory01.html

Sony's Ebook readers like PRS-T3 are firmware Android based and can be rooted using an external hardware flasher (similar to DPT-S1) and their source code is available from the same link you provided:
http://oss.sony.net/Products/Linux/A...ategory03.html

There is a hope for DPT-R1 owners missing the browser - Chromium is among the source code:
http://oss.sony.net/Products/Linux/dp/DPT-RP1.html
