Just finished "The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp." This was an audio book... it is another "young reader" book. The main reason I listened to it was because we started listening to it in a car trip to pick up my son from UF (2 hours each way) and I wanted to finish it, it is 6 hours of audio.
I thought it was a good story. Well done and the audio book (from Listening Library) was very good. I seem to enjoy even "young reader" books. Perhaps I am a simpleton. Some enjoyable books like Time Cavern, Ender's Game, Harry Potter, etc. Also may try the Artimus Fowl(sp?) books too. BOb |

It's not young adult, it's pretty sophisticated at times. It's one of the few books I have ever read more than once, because there is so much to take in. |

Ender's Game remains one of my all-time favorites, though I liked Speaker for the Dead even more. I've actually enjoyed the Bean books, as well. I thought the 3rd and 4th Ender books weren't quite as good. First Meetings is a lot of fun, and I was surprised to find how much more I liked the novel version of Ender's Game than the original novella.
I liked Pastwatch, but I think Card kind of wimped out on the central moral issue. I'd be interested in other opinions on that, maybe in a separate thread so we don't have to worry about spoilers. My other favorite of Card's books is Songmaster. Card's style is generally very clear and readable. I know a lot of authors who get a bit carried away in the elaborate turns of phrase or heavy description. I imagine his background as a playwright does help. But he covers very interesting, intricate human issues. The only other SF author I can think of offhand who does as much with the psychology of the characters is C.J. Cherryh, but she's not quite as easy to read. Or maybe some of Ursula Le Guin, but the same readability issue. I read a lot of "young adult" books as well. I just finished rereading Princess Academy by Shannon Hale, which I highly recommend. Disregard the title -- this is not a "Disney princess" story. This is a very well-written story about the clash between provincial and mainstream cultures, and the struggles of individuals to find their place in their own communities. I recommend Hale's other works, as well. |

It's OK to skip Magic Street. I think even kids would find it silly. I think it is the last pbook I ever read, back in 2007.

Finished _Refuge_ by Richard Herley, the Feb 09 Mobieread Book Club selection. I thought this was a good read and more than worth the requested $1.50... I will be paying it right after I send this message even though Mr. Herley said he would wave the fee requierment for MRBC readers.
Started _The Curse of Chalion_ by Lois McMaster Bujold on audibook, recommended by someone on this forum. It didn't start with a bang, but to be fair I am only about 20mins in so far, so it is just getting started. Will read _The Casebook of Sherlock Homes_ next. This is the last book of the Sherlock Holmes Omnibus which I started after reading _The Hound of the Baskervilles_ for the book club. The Omnibus is alot of reading. 8 or 9 books basically. Some were very good, some not so good. My biggest problem with some/most of these stories is that there is no opportunity for the reader to solve the puzzle. Not all information is given until Holmes explains how he figured something out. The fun of mysteries to me is trying to figure it out on my own. Next, after that, I'm not sure. Either _UR_ by Steven King or _Oliver Twist_ by Dickens recommended by HarryT as a good starting point for that author. I d/led this to my Kindle via Whispernent and the Mobileread download guide. So convienient. Suggestions? I just love books! BOb |

I just wrapped up Refuge, too, and am now reading "Just One of the Guys," by Kristan Higgins.
BOb, you should try the Dresden Files series ![]() |
