It's Coral and Brass, by Holland M. Smith; Percy Finch. Concerns the U.S. Marines in World War II, in the Pacific theater. Reprint; originally published in 1949.

There are many, many books about the War. This one stands out because 1) it is free, and 2) the ratings are through the roof, both at Amazon (4.6 stars (36) and GoodReads 4.39 (67). I encourage you to read the review on the only 1-star rating (the only one at Amazon under 4-star) at Amazon, however, questioning the legitimacy of the book, to see if you think that it has any merit.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071KDJZN3.

If it was removed from print in 1949, the copyright was very unlikely to have been renewed and so the book would have entered the public domain in 1978 or so, 28 years later

Assuming both authors are American, and I did see several works by Holland Smith in the copyright renewals (although that's no guarantee it's this Holland Smith), I couldn't find Coral and Brass in either the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database (for works published from 1923 to 1950) or the Library of Congress Copyright Renewal Database (1950 - 1964). If so, it's quite likely this is in the public domain.

I wonder how true the author's premise is. If it's true, it's scary and doesn't bode well for the U.S. Hopefully, he's got a lot of facts to back up his premise.

Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men. By Leonard Sax.

Stellar ratings--4.6 stars (353) at Amazon; 4.13 (3.746). Rated #1 seller in three Amazon Kindle or regular books categories.

Substantial in size--354 pages.

$1.99.

I read the one star review and can only say that the USMC obviously didn't have any lasting concern with General Holland McTyeire Smith since they acquired the Aiea Naval Hospital in Aiea, Hawaii for use as a Marine Corps Base in 1955, just six years after the book was originally challenged, and the base was named Camp Holland M Smith (now better known as Camp H M Smith or just Camp Smith to those of us who work there). There is a bronze bust of General Smith located in the lobby of the original hospital, which now serves as HQ for Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC).

Camp H M Smith is also home to US Pacific Command (USPACOM, the unified US Combatant Command with responsibility for 49% of the earth's surface) and to Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC).

I haven't posted any Open Access (in the way that I'm using the terms, they're free) books recently.

I ran across Scandinavian University Press' website earlier today and somehow ended up on a webpage with a selection of OA books. Alas, most are in some foreign (foreign to me) language--some kind of Scandinavian language, I'm sure. But they do have a handful of titles in English. Here's one for you.

India's Democracies: Diversity, Co-optation, Resistance. By Arild Engelsen Ruud & Geir Heierstad. There is a button, even after I translate the webpage, that says "PDF av boka." That might give you the impression that you will get a PDF, but it will be in some language other than English. Not so. The PDF is in English.

The book is not available for sale in the U.S., as far as I can determine; you can only get it free. Wouldn't it be nice if all books were that way?

You've always wanted to speak like the pirates of old times spoke, right? Sure, I knew that you did (just work with me here. ha).

Anyway, WarGameVault has a very-highly rated book by George Choundas, entitled The Pirate Primer: Mastering the Language of Swashbuckers and Rogues. It's on sale as today's Deal of the Day (there are about 14 hours from now left on the deal) for only $6.00. Amazon's Kindle is outrageously priced at $9.99!

According to Amazon's book description, this book is "the only authoritative work on the pirate language."

Of course, we don't really, completely know how pirates spoke in their day. I mean there were no tape recorders, CD recorders, MP3 recorders, and such like in their days. I doubt that anyone thought of taking dictation of what pirates said, for the purpose of the reading enjoyment of people in 2017. Rather, "The Pirate Primer contains three centuries of distinctive terms and usages uttered by (and attributed to) pirates in film, TV, literature, and history." (Amazon).

There are nearly 500 pages of pirate-type talk in this tome!

This book, as sold by WarGameVault, is available in only the ePub format, it appears.

I was reading, not very long ago, about the efforts of people to conquer this mountain. I wasn't reading very intently (a fault of mine) and forgot most of what I read.

But I do remember that while Annapurna is not the tallest mountain in the world, it may be the most challenging to climb, for several reasons. It takes weeks, if I remember correctly, just to walk your way to the base of the actual mountain itself, because of its remoteness. The trek begins in a jungle.

This 4.3-star (Amazon), 4.05 (5,518) (GoodReads) rated book looks like the one to read about this mountain and efforts to conquer it. I know one thing, it is a true bargain at 99 cents, representing 95% off of its regular digital price.

I sure wish that there was an audio book version to this book.

The price is right (free)! The ratings are great (4.5 stars at Amazon (36)).

Not many pages, though (150).

Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims. By Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins.

The book description is short, and speaks volumes, so I'm going to repeat it:
Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims is the first known autobiography by an a Native American woman. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins' riveting, heartbreaking memoir is both a history of the Piute Indian tribe and an account of the devastation caused to the Piute people after their first contact with white men in the nineteenth century.

I'd like to give my personal political historical opinion, on the subjects in the book, but the last time that I did on a book containing subjects like this, someone accused me of being anti-American (I hope that I'm representing his or her views accurately; I did not go back and search for the messages in that short exchange of opinions).

Super Nuke!: A Memoir About Life as a Nuclear Submariner and the Contributions of a "Super Nuke" - the USS RAY (SSN653) Toward Winning the Cold War by Charles Cranston Jett

An entertaining and factual memoir of an important time and series of events in the history of the cold war. He has succeeded in telling the unclassified story of the journey taken by an extraordinary group of men who built the first operational “Super Nuke” and effectively shared what they developed with others in the entire US nuclear submarine force. He created the SSN Pre Deployment training program, consolidated developments made on the Ray to create the highly useful Geographic Plot (Geo Plot) and wrote the tactical doctrine for the SSN based electronic intelligence collection system
