Sounds promising to me. Thank you very much for the first impressions.
Now I have to setup my new "cloud"

You're welcome! It took me about fifteen minutes to transfer all of my files from Box to my computer and then onto the RP1.

Using the Box Sync program, free to download from Box.com, I synched all of my Box folders to my computer. I then created folders in the Digital Paper App with the same names as the folders from Box.

After that, I choose each folder in the Digital Paper App, set the synch folder to the same folder that Box had created on my computer, and synched. Voila! It all worked and everything was transferred to the RP1. Pretty easy, I think.

To do subsequent syncs do you need to click on a button on the app?

Good question. Let me set the synch timeout in the Digital Paper App to its shortest time period, 10 minutes, add a PDF to Box, and see if it magically appears on the RP1! I think it should....

And the answer is, it's seamless. You don't have to press a Synch button.

I downloaded an EPUB from Gutenberg, The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories by Chekov, if you're curious, and ran it through Calibre to create a PDF.

I then uploaded the PDF to the Box folder through the website. I could just as well have moved the PDF into the Box sync directory on my computer. After that, BoxSynch copied the file to my local directory.

Ten minutes or so later, the PDF showed up on the RP1. Remember, I have the RP1 logged into my Wifi network.

So I ordered one of these to review and I'm completely baffled by the lack of navigation options and how no one has mentioned it yet over here or on the early reviews at Amazon.

It makes me wonder am I missing something?

It's mind-boggling to me that the only way to navigate a PDF is linearly. There's no table of contents. You can't jump to a specific page number. If you click an embedded link to go further in the document there's no back button to get back to the previous location.

The only way to move around the PDF is to use a small 2-inch page dial to randomly jump but it's too inaccurate to select specific pages.

Also having no scrolling while zoomed in makes no sense.

Didn't the 1st gen model have these basic features?

I was wondering about the table of contents too. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but I'm curious for longer PDF files (eg textbooks).

I'd been contemplating splitting important large files into multiple PDFs or using the searchable star/asterix feature to mark chapters. Not the end of the world if they removed it, but an odd basic feature of PDF files to take away.

For shorter academic articles, the thumbnail view seems like a good option to navigate to specific pages.

It's never been claimed to be aimed at business users either, you're the only one making that claim.

The device is aimed at anyone that finds eInk tablets useful for their purpose, of which business users may be substantial share, but I suspect even more academics.

Although the inability to download and sync documents directly from cloud services makes the device very limited for people working in teams. If colleagues want you to read or sign a document, they can't simply get the document on your device by uploading it to a cloud folder - instead they need to get hold of your device, pair it manually to their pc and then drag and drop files on it - terrible for most business users and academics.

Musicians, medics and so on may also be part of the audience once software for hands-free page turning is developed for the device, but I suspect Sony's software team for this device is very small at the moment. They have been mainly concerned with removing features from its predecessor S1 (browser, cloud downloads, and so on) and added very few new features (e.g. split screen).

Huh? I just explained how the device automatically synched documents from a Box folder to a user's PC, and then onto the RP1. Other users do not have to get ahold of your device in order to send you a document. They just need to upload a file to a public Box folder or a public DropBox folder which is synched to the target user's computer, and their RP1.

You seem to be a big Sony hater. Is that just because you preordered the reMarkable? LOL.

Handsfree page turning is an edge case. I'm glad Sony did not hold the device back from the market for that!

Yes but you still need to have your DPT RP1 paired to your pc which is running the Digital Paper App to receive the documents from Box - totally different from direct cloud downloads.

I have a DPT RP1 here, pre ordered the first day it was announced, but I am considering switching to the reMarkable if it has direct cloud downloads options (which it seems it does).

No hate here, competition is good, if Sony or reMarkable had a monopoly in this market it'd be terrible, you should realize that.

My unit has a slight bit of waviness on the bezel area next to the home button and above the power button and reset port that can be seen at an angle and felt when running a dumb over it. Does anyone else notice this too or is it just this particular unit?

Thanks

That's awesome - thanks for sharing, Larry. Has anyone tested to see if the device allows for nested subfolders?

Honestly, how many people are away from their computers for even a few hours? You're making the lack of cloud integration into a bigger issue than it is, in my opinion.

Sony designs and builds quality products and delivers them. I support companies that get things to market. Nobody has a monopoly on building hardware devices, anybody can try to put one out there, but small companies usually fail because they don't have the financial resources to cover the huge costs involved in the effort.

Ha ha, another task. I don't see why not. I can create a folder within a folder in the Digital Paper App, if I recall correctly, but I'll try it out.
