I suspect it is a Carta screen which would increase contrast making the text darker. Higher resolution by itself would likely have thinner therefore lighter text.

I can try, the trouble is that I use it for work and cannot publish my notes. Any chance you can find a Sony store and try one out? I hate to lead people astray.

Yes, that makes sense. I also feel that the new screen has more of a texture than the old screen. I prefer the extra bite that I feel when writing.

There is a gray nib in the pen, and there are two black ones and a gray one in a little plastic bag. It's really hard for me to describe the feeling of the gray nib, I can't tell how much of the feeling of friction comes from the nib and how much comes from the screen texture.

From the website:

"Enjoy a smooth, natural writing experience with these replacement stylus tips. Specially designed for use with the DPTA-RS1 Digital Paper Stylus, these tips come in two different materials—choose felt for pencil-like writing, or polyoxymethylene for pen-like writing."

Good old polyoxymethylene! So, I guess I'm using the gray felt one that is supposed to feel like a pencil. Ok, I love pencils, especially the Palomino Blackwing, but I'm not sure this feels the same. Still, it's better than a pencil because the tip does not break off!

I'll try to get up the nerve to switch nibs to the black one. They're kind of precious, none of the S1 nibs I have fit it, as far as I know, and the RP1 nibs are backordered.

DPT-RP1 hardware was tested in June 2016 by FCC. It looks like Sony was polishing the software for a while.

Any tips where to start hacking this reader?

I got it 3 hours ago. Some of my notes:
- the screen looks great, higher resolution makes the text crisp and easier to the eyes, a major improvement from DPT-S1.
- the writing is a bit sketchy, the friction seems higher than DPT-S1. Perhaps because of new pen, or because of the panel (?)
- I can't write anything at first on the test page (you will see the test page when first setup the device to test out writing). Some dots appeared when I tried to write but not a solid line. Not sure it's a software issue or hardware. But when I switch to write a real note, it works. Some times the problem reappears, I'm not sure if I have a faulty pen/device
- I can't setup sync with Digital paper app. When plugin to computer the sync dialog box appear for 5-10 seconds and disappear, then the app says you need to sync but apparently disconnected. I tried so many times this does not work for me. Kinda frustrated now...

Note: my pen and device are both fully charged.

Anybody with dirty hands looking at different manuals/instructions.
Anywhere where hygienic disinfected hands are priority.
Anywhere where static free hands are priority.
Most of the musicians would turn pages hands free.

I am in a part of Japan that Sony doesn't cater to. I understand if you can't publish your notes, I just thought you'd perhaps have some doodle pages from testing out the styles before you got into the hard work.

Huh, that's strange. There is a reset button on the top of the device, I don't know if that would help. I think there is another initialize in the Settings.

Did you calibrate the stylus?

thanks. Reinitialize make the stylus work fine. However I still can't pair with DPA on my Mac. Would probably ask for a replacement, at least I bought through Amazon so replacing is not an issue.

I don't disagree, but this is a device targetted specifically at business users; it's never been claimed to be aimed at a wider audience. Business users have, I suspect, little use for hands-free page turning.

Yeah, one problem solved!

Now, for synching, that is a mystery. What version of OS X are you running? I'm on Sierra 10.12.5.

When I set up the first time, it connected with no problems. I set up the Wifi option, and just tried it. So, if the device is in sleep mode, it cannot connect to it. Once I turned on the power button, it took ten seconds or so and the Digital Paper App connected to it.

My Digital Paper App is version 1.2.1.05010, I don't think there is a newer version.

Sorry I can't help more, it should just work. ;-)
