Android would be perfect. No need for Windows for me.

Thanks! We'll see.

Since the Mach kernel, which became Apple's operating system, is from Carnegie Mellon, and which was brought into Apple by Steve Jobs after he failed at NextSTEP, goes back to 1985, and Linux was created around 1991, shouldn't we say that Linux is not far from the Mac? ;-)

Honestly, I hate all operating systems, especially Unix, the worst thing to ever come out of New Jersey besides the C programming language. Operating systems are just a collection of things that don't fit anywhere, they really shouldn't exist. My best times have been programming in a pure object-oriented system, Smalltalk, and not thinking about any operating system at all.

Anyway, Linux is just not for the masses, I don't see Sony supporting it. Linux is too much of a geek's operating system. Sorry.

Ha ha, it has arrived!

First impression, it's lighter than the S1.

Second impression, it's much faster.

Turned it on, it is encrypting the storage system.

Ok, working through the on-boarding screens and can't trace the dotted line because the stylus is dead. Charging it. The stylus has a little pop off cover on the top held on by a thin piece of plastic. I can see that breaking over time, but it's not a big deal.

Someone asked me about the cover. I ordered the cover but it has not been shipped yet.

Shipping from B&H

Happy to announce that my order shipped from B&H. I've had the DPT-S1 for the past few years, and have been looking forward to this for a while.

I've heard that it comes with a protector cover as well, but I haven't seen it in any of the YouTube videos that are out, and it doesn't seem to be mentioned on the product specifications page either.

It doesn't come with any protector cover. They charge $60 extra for that. I posted a link to a $15 laptop sleeve that will work with it.

Hi LarryNYC, thanks for the response. I guess I should have been more specific. I meant a transparent screen protector to guard against scratches while writing etc.

It doesn't come with that either. :-) It comes in a plastic bag but I don't think you can write through it.

Just got the official unable to ship, will notify you when available notice from Amazon. June 1st preorder, so I think that's a good sign Sony has a successful preorder count on their hands.

One feature I'm curious to see if they ported over from the S1 is the ability to access the table of contents or use native bookmarks in a PDF. Couldn't find a mention in the user guide online.

Back in the old days. someone said that Leica should stop putting all the of parts into their cameras because a lot of collectors never ran any film through them!

I hope B&H ships the cover with the DPT RP1. Both are in stock regarding to the status of my order.
Can't wait to work with the new gadget
Thank you for your first impressions. The stylus has a micro-usb connection?

Haha, thanks LarryNYC. There are official Sony screen protectors that were made for the DPT-S1 like this one. I'm wondering if these will also work on the RP1, even though I believe the RP1 is more or less flush across the surface.

I have some of these protectors. Will check the size when the RP1 arrives

"We all learned how to write and sketch by hand, it's far more efficient than with a keyboard. . . . To me, the S1 and RP1 are idea generators. Engage your brain and your hand and take a break from the keyboard. Have you ever seen pages from an inventor's notebook? That's what this is, a modern inventor's notebook."[/QUOTE]

Having used such devices for twenty years as idea generators, beginning with the Newton, it is very useful to occasionally attach a keyboard. As you point out, one writes and works differently with a keyboard; most people type much faster than they handwrite. Keyboard support, therefore, would be useful. (And juggling devices is not.)

I'm sorry to see musicians, for whom hands-free page turning is critical, also overlooked by Sony's failure to support mirroring or any Bluetooth device.

Thank you for your first impressions. The stylus has a micro-usb connection?
Yes, the top of the stylus has the same micro-USB connection as the device. It took about an hour or so to charge the stylus.

Right away, I noticed that the paging is much faster than on the old one and the writing is much faster too. Erasing is a joy, it is lightning fast. When you erase, I see PDF text look like it gets erased some and then it gets redrawn, not a big deal.

I paired with the Digital Paper App, that was a pretty easy procedure. I'll start moving my Box.com documents over to it.

Oh, I see the all of the stylus tips are out of stock and I was informed that it might be 1-2 months. Sigh. I hope the tips that came with it last that long. When I started using the RP1, I picked up the old stylus and tried to write something, out of habit. Haha, that does not work!

I stocked up on all of the old style tips and I guess I can't use them in the new stylus, oh, well.

The black of the text seems blacker to me than the old one, perhaps because the tablet has a higher resolution, it does, doesn't it?

I'm happy with it already and will provide more impressions as I use it.
