Presumably it mounts as an external drive via USB, like the older model did?

From reading those threads, it does not. Transfers only via proprietary app.

I would write a program therefore (maybe use another freeware tool like AutoIt). Ready is the remote control or my own cloud sync. If Sony isn't able to add such simple functions to their firmware.... in a common sense quiet ridiculous for a company like Sony. I never-ever understood companies which act like this. It seems that they never ask their customers. Maybe only the guys on Amazon and here want this feature.... but I bet there are more.

Perhaps if this model succeeds at this price point beyond what they expect, they will release a web connected model. That would be the best of both worlds.

I for one will not let this change my decision to buy. I have just pre-ordered and can not wait to get my hands on this. My home computer is always connected, and syncing isn't a big deal to me. If anything it will keep me focused on the task at hand and I'll be unable to distract myself with the wild wild net.
Killing a feature this way is stupid. There are other features like buttons XD XD to change a setting.... from autosync to manual sync.... cloud sync to "wired" sync

These discussions are talking about syncing, which is not at all the same thing as simple file transfer. Syncing means that if you change the file in one place, it'll automatically change somewhere else. That why I asked if the capability to simply copy files via a mounted drive was still there.

To answer my own question, I see from the user manual that documents can indeed only be transferred from the PC application (either by USB cable, WiFi or Bluetooth). That does indeed seem like a retrograde step.

I wonder if they rewrote all the system software or changed the operating system or something because they cut features. The previous model was based on Linux if I remember correctly.

Unfortunately, the temptation to make any successful product more and more proprietary, in order to lock customers in, is in Sony's DNA. They've studied Apple's business model thoroughly, and despite failing miserably, having to sell their Vaio division, they stick to it like flies to you know what. They simply do not understand that noon-Apple customers think and react differently.

DPT-S1's runs an android based OS, which sony has modified to prevent native android operation.

That's a little unfair on Apple, don't you think? As I said in a previous post, iPads have absolutely no requirement to use a PC app, or even to own a PC, in order to load content. They can be used as completely "standalone" devices. I know a couple of people who use an iPad as their sole computing device, and that's very much the road that Apple are going down these days.

@HarryT

That is not how I meant it. In order to have the Apple experience you have to go along with Apple controlling both dimensions of their devices, hardware and software. Sony has tried to do the same since Idei took over, with disastrous results, unlike Apple who understands what their customers desire. Hirai seems to be trying to take the company in a different direction, but it isn't easy to change direction on a behemoth with a conservative work force like Sony.

Even Apple has the iCloud, which every device can access. Didn't get the point of Sony. Sure, the sync with the application is easier for them to be compatible, but sometimes the easiest way is not the best. Interessting question for me: Why do they add the function first? Some user requested dropbox and other cloud services, but why do they kill the complete feature on the device? Is working great for most of the people. Box.com has a free account with enough space.

Hi everyone,

I don't see nothing in the DPT-RP1's user guide that refers to note taking with a virtual keyboard.

Does someone know if the device offers that functionality ?

Thanks in advance

Just for the final confirmation, I got this note from Sony:

Sony Support USA says
"Hi Howard, The DPT-RP1 syncing—including with any cloud service your computer is connected to—is done only through the Digital Paper App. At this time, DPT-RP1 cannot connect directly to a cloud service without the use of the Digital Paper App. -Jen"
