And yet, the boards are loaded with Kindle discussions, and more new members than we can keep up with, a phenomenon that started with the release of the Kindle2, and the offer of a free Kindle.

That idea comes from a series of little news bits on MR. I don't have the links and I don't have time to look them up.

Transparent batteries.
Magnetic recharging pad. Just drop the device on it for a few hours and it's done.
Printed microcircuits that become almost transparent.
Flexible microcircuits.
Wireless communications. Drop your device next to a computer equiped with a similar language and voilà. SD not required.
Touchpad.

See? All functional atributes that are visible on a device can be taken care of: replaced or virtualized.

So this device is not farfetched at all. Every item already exists.

There's a downside to this gadget that would kill it even before it could be made. Transparency. You would always have to put it over a pale surface to use it. If the table you read on was black...well,that would be frustrating to say the least!
