Caged chicken are only kept alive for 18 months then they are killed & eaten. I lived near a poultry farm.... thankfully not near enough to smell it. Ran out of gas the woman had her son bring some. She gave me a tour of the place. Interesting what a city girl learns by accident.

Our store was out of the ones we buy, so I bought some Eggland's Best. They tasted horrible, we threw most of them away. http://www.chinovalleyranchers.com/3...age-free-eggs/ It will be interesting to see how this Whole Foods story plays out, and what Amazon has in mind. |

Rather than going after Walmart SNAP customers, the Whole Foods purchase is more likely related to Whole Food's upscale customer base.
They have been looking into adding automation, just like Amazon: https://www.geekwire.com/2017/365-wh...uture-stepped/ …and their stores are a good place for AI data collection: https://www.geekwire.com/2017/amazon...ence-research/ Oh and no, whole foods was nowhere near bankruptcy. It is a healthy, if underperforming, company. $16B in 2016 sales, 30M unique customers, and ~$500m in 2016 profit. https://amigobulls.com/stocks/WFM/in...atement/annual |

I love eggs. But not enough to pay 4+ dollars a dozen for those laid by chickens whose "free range" status is at best semantic, and at worst, an outright lie (I'm speaking of commercial ventures here).
The flavor difference is noticeable (I've tried them all). But it's not a dramatic difference, in my opinion. Certainly not worth the extortionate prices they're asking for something that still needs to have poop cleaned from it before it goes to market. |

We got lucky. We know a couple people that have chickens that sell us eggs. The chickens are treated well, free range, fed quality feed, and the eggs taste great. And they cost us no more than Egglands Best eggs at the store. The one big thing for me is I'm allergic to eggs (migraines/tummy unhappy if I eat them too often) but with both the friends' eggs I have no problem with them.
So, if you like free range egg taste, ask around. People you know may have chickens and be willing to part with eggs and not cost you an arm and a leg. And no, we don't live out in the country. S |

The Washington Post has a whole bunch of articles about organic products.
The most recent was about milk: https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...=.fe2a60f7a8f0 The general theme is "caveat emptor". With upscale products the consumer value doesn't lie just in the substance (say, nutrition value) but also in the customer's perception/satisfaction. They are often described as lifestyle products and aspirational products. One person's unnecessary luxury is the next's "treat" or even necessity. There's room for everybody. |

I did now and it leads me to some sort of news-feed that doesn't remain static, apparently. It seems to be in german as well, and a quick search for "whole" didn't find anything, probably because it's too far back already. Quote:
Never really much, though, making me somewhat suspicious. Since I've often seen hardboiled eggs that were colored (using a neutral light brown), I wouldn't be surprised if the eggs were similarly "decorated"... |
