WebDAV is supposedly gone but the Sony representative that answers the questions on the Amazon product listing claims there is cloud sync. I wrote a question asking if it is via your computer but they haven't answered it yet.

Thanks for the warning. What an unfortunate step backwards. I, too, was happy with WebDAV support which is a well known open protocol which is easy to support. I don't have Windows, neither will I rely on any closed source ware. Until we have a fix for this issue I'm probably not going to get the RP1, then :-(

This is exactly my problem with it and why I didn't care for iOS/iTunes.

That said, I am conflicted, as I am really keen on this device.

But you don't have to use iTunes to get content onto an iPad. I use my iPad primarily as a PDF reader, and load the overwhelming majority of my PDF files via WiFi on the iPad itself, storing them in the Cloud for cross-device accessibility.

Ok guys, so the only way to get files on the DPT RP 1 is to

1. connect the dpt rp1 and pc (by usb, wifi or bluetooth)
2. open the app on pc
2. manually select the files
3. drag them to the dpt rp1

You can't just drop files in a folder and it will automatically sync?

If so then I am cancelling my pre order, I can't be arsed to open the app every time I download a pdf file I have to read - I just want to drop pdf files in a folder (perfectly, a Dropbox folder) and have it auto sync.

I sometimes receive 100+ student assignments over the course of 1 day, and every time I receive one I have to manually put it on DPT RP1 with the app? Come on Sony, if you're targeting the academic audience you can't put such shit up.

I think there is some kind of automatic sync ONLY with the app.
As you can see in this video approx. at 3:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFV8VkaeLzA
On approx. 7:20 the guy is using another folder....

Another point would be an mobile app for Android or iOS, but there is no one...
I currently thinking of canceling my preorder and wait for further updates.

On the Amazon listing they just added more promotional material:

Automatically sync content from cloud services to Digital Paper.

I'm very excited about this reader, and am probably going to purchase it.

But one thing I'm wondering about is a carrying messenger-bag.

I have a messenger-bag for 10-inch tablets, but this is larger in surface area.

Can anyone recommend an appropriate messenger-bag? Cheaper is better, since I don't really care about looks. (I'm in Canada, for what it's worth.)

Just cancelled my pre-order, syncing is through app only instead of just dropping files in a folder:

Question: Do I have to use the computer app to sync or is there a way to sync from the device directly to cloud storage?
Answer: Hi Joe H., Yes, syncing is done only through the Digital Paper App on your computer. -JenBy Sony U. on June 17, 2017

I asked one question on Amazon. If the Sony App will connect and sync automatically or if I have to press a button. If it connects automatic and sync automatic there is a workaround for me. I have to add a VM to my server with the app on it running. Mobile access via VPN to this machine. Otherwise I'm thinking of canceling the order. The S1 is then the better choice for me.

The RP1 is such a great device but Sony just kills features without thinking.
Can't be that hard to add WebDAV, but Sony maybe doesn't care. With WebDV the RP1 is perfect for me. Mobile Digital Paper... that's what the RP1 means to me.

I've been wondering if you could record a little screen macro to hit the Synch button every five minutes.

I saw that answer but it contradicts some other answers that were given. Plus at the bottom of the listing page now on Amazon, it states it syncs to cloud services. So confusing.

It sync through cloud services but only through the app. So you're still forced to use the app, click, drag, and drop in there. This kills productivity, especially if you receive many pdfs throughout the day and want them on your device automatically. Also if you have colleagues who want you to read or sign a pdf, they need the app as well to get in on your device.

Horrible, this app necessity and removal of things like WebDav kills the whole idea of targeting academics/lawyers and so on.

Yes, I think you are right. According to how the Sony rep answered my question a moment ago, your understanding is correct since the tablet can't directly connect to the internet at all according to the rep.

Indeed this feels like a step backwards in a day where everything is connected, however I can only imagine this was done by request of paying customers, ie: Lawyers. Security and providing protection against hacks must have been the reason.

Perhaps if this model succeeds at this price point beyond what they expect, they will release a web connected model. That would be the best of both worlds.

I for one will not let this change my decision to buy. I have just pre-ordered and can not wait to get my hands on this. My home computer is always connected, and syncing isn't a big deal to me. If anything it will keep me focused on the task at hand and I'll be unable to distract myself with the wild wild net.
