I'm leaning towards not buying this device, now that it appears that an application is required to transfer files to and from it. But I am going to wait and see what hands-on reviewers say before making a final decision.

I see this as a huge plus. An app makes this all simpler.

If you want to transfer just to your computer it is fine. But most don't want to touch their computer and connect to the cloud. I hope that they didn't take out Box compatibility

And that's all I want. I don't want to connect to Dropbox, etc. So for me, assuming they can get the pedal thing sorted, it's an ideal device. Drag and drop would have been better but I'll take an app.

the cloud is still up in the air for direct connection but you needn't touch your computer. It will work via Wi-Fi and via Blutooth. If you have a cloud app or folder on your computer you should be able to just copy it to that. It does support more than one computer so you could have the app on whatever computer you need it on. Linux and Chrome are problematic.

Daniel Albohn from Sony Digital Paper Solutions confirmed in this podcast (18m30s) that Bluetooth pedal page turning is disabled. What a bummer for musicians.

Yes, he said the page turners weren't supported yet but that it was on his list, so we have been heard. Hopefully we'll get the feature soon and that the performance of it is fast enough to work when playing in an ensemble.

A friend of mine teaches in a medical school and he said one of the things he has had to get used to is hearing the clatter of thirty or more keyboards when he says a word and the silence that follows when he stops speaking. He said it is kind of weird. I'm sure he would prefer a roomful of DPT-RP1s, with their silent note taking ability.

For me, the digital paper device allows me to use my hands in a much freer way than is possible with a keyboard. It's not the digital paper that's important as much as it is the stylus and it's ability to act like a pencil.

1. Daniel Albohn sounds more like marketing guy responsible for selling Digital Paper in US. I think Japan is who decides if this feature could be enabled or not.

2. Good few people including me were lobbying at multiple places for a Bluetooth chip since day one DPT-S1 was announced without it in 2013. They did not get it in Japan.

I hadn't seen this video posted. A nice close up sample of handwriting. English samples start at the 1:00 min mark.

Yes, but it seems like Daniel has some input in the process, from the comments he made about other features in the product. I don't think its use in musical settings is the main use case for the RP1. It's certainly not why I bought it.

For ensemble playing, I'll be ok sticking with a few sheets of music and a Palomino Blackwing pencil. ;-)

Yes, I think so. I didn't notice the redrawing that I see with the DPT-S1, and the lag time seems to be almost nonexistent. I'm definitely excited about receiving the new model.

I think the best thing to buy with the device is a second pen, given that it needs charging Also looking forward to the first English review.

I ordered one from B&H. One thing I'm really missing is the pure cloud-sync. Box.com was perfect working. The application is ok, but you have to start the pc, connect and then manually select the files. There is no comfort. They should have just added WebDAV support for people who really want a cloud-solution. This solution is maybe suitable for some people but not for all. I run Linux on my notebook. Now I have to start a VM to sync my files. This is really annoying me.
