Since I can't see the sale items I'd appreciate if someone would let me know whether "The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World" is part of the sale.

The only title I found with "Other" was "The other side of 1492".

Why does Audible think it's a good idea to hide the Daily Deal from nonmembers? Now I can't see it on my tablet; even entering "daily deal" in the search box doesn't access it anymore.

Yes, thanks, that's fine on my PC, but my habit has been to use my Fire tablet, checking the Audible store. And there they've suddenly eliminated the little rotating box where I could immediately click on the Daily Deal. Now I see the same ad urging me to rejoin as I'd been seeing on my PC since ending my membership. They're making me jump through more hoops to get to what I want.

I just don't get it. Audible seems to have made a series of changes that all result in making me less likely to purchase. Do they think that will encourage me to rejoin instead? It won't.

The end of the OverDrive/Whispersync deal and the colossal jump in Whispersync prices on the classics have caused me to buy far fewer audiobooks than I used to. It's not as if I shrugged my shoulders and decided to use pricey credits on these titles instead. I do without.

I have no idea what the price elasticity is on audiobooks, but $14.95 or thereabouts is a dealbreaker for me; I'd be willing to go higher than $1.99 or $2.99, but we're not even in shouting distance. Fortunately, OverDrive isn't going to run out of audiobooks any time soon.

Downpour -- Rental of the Week -- exp 19 Jun
Quote:
Helen Moran is thirty-two years old, single, childless, college educated, and partially employed as a guardian of troubled young people in New York. She is accepting a furniture delivery in her shared studio apartment when her uncle calls to break the news: Helen’s adoptive brother is dead.

According to the Internet, there are six possible reasons why her brother might have killed himself. But Helen knows better: she knows that six reasons is only shorthand for “the abyss.” Helen also knows that she alone is qualified to launch a serious investigation into his death, so she purchases a one-way ticket to Milwaukee. There, as she searches her childhood home and attempts to uncover why someone would choose to die, she will face her estranged family, her brother’s few friends, and the overzealous grief counselor, Chad Lambo; she may also discover what it truly means to be alive.

A bleakly comic tour de force that’s by turns poignant, uproariously funny, and viscerally unsettling, this debut novel has shades of Bernhard, Beckett, and Bowles—and it announces the singular voice of Patty Yumi Cottrell.

Downpour -- Deal of the Week -- exp 19 Jun
  • $4.95 -- Deep Undercover -- Jack Barsky, et al/ Stephen Bowlby --> 10.8 hrs --> memoir
Quote:
Deep Undercover: My Secret Life and Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America

One decision can end everything … or lead to unlikely redemption.

Millions watched the CBS 60 Minutes special on Jack Barsky in 2015. Now, in this fascinating memoir, the Soviet KGB agent tells his story of gut-wrenching choices, appalling betrayals, his turbulent inner world, and the secret life he lived for years without getting caught.

On October 8, 1978, a Canadian national by the name of William Dyson stepped off a plane at O’Hare International Airport and proceeded toward customs and immigration.

Two days later, William Dyson ceased to exist.

The identity was a KGB forgery, used to get one of their own―a young, ambitious East German agent―into the United States.

The plan succeeded, and the spy’s new identity was born: Jack Barsky. He would work undercover for the next decade, carrying out secret operations during the Cold War years—until a surprising shift in his allegiance challenged everything he thought he believed.

Deep Undercover reveals the secret life of this man without a country and tells the story no one ever expected him to tell.

Audible does have a few books that are not available elsewhere (e.g., from Audible Studios), so at some point I will probably rejoin to pick those up. But right now I'm more likely to try libro.fm, and/or Downpour.

Could someone check to see if "America and the World: A Diplomatic History" is included? Thanks!

I mentioned in previous posts . . . I have an "Inactive Light" (the old "Listener Light," membership, I'm sure). I do see the Audible Daily Deals. I can see them on their homepage, plus they send me announcements by email everyday. Oh, and I have bought them successfully--quite a few of them, actually.

I suppose that if you are a complete non-member, it is different. Personally, I've found $10 a year to be well worth the money in order to get this, and access to many--not all (all sales for credit members, I think)--sales.

Someone mentioned Libro.fm a few posts back . . . .

I went to their website, because I was not very familiar with them (I hadn't even set a bookmark--that's inexcusable. ha).

Anyway, on their homepage is their latest membership special. "Get your first month for $0.99, and save 30% on all additional audiobooks."

It just occurred to me that 'monkey might have this on the O.P. If so, I apologize for the repeat. Of course, he may have the information buried under a dozen layers of links, where no one can find it, and even the search engine can't find it. But I don't. ha

https://libro.fm/.
