Sony had an eInk reader PRS-950 that was a 7" model and it allowed landscape with two columns. I loved this device. Too bad the Sony bookstore was so pathetic. Basically the PRS-950 was a stretched out 6" screen. Basically about the same width as a 6" screen but taller (or longer). Even if Amazon made a 7" Kindle, those idiots probably wouldn't allow landscape with two columns.

I had various Sony readers for years, and never once bought a book from the Sony bookstore. At that time most of my books came from Fictionware, who offered the LRF format that Sony used at the time.

I did the same Harry, mostly buying through 3rd party bookstores. It became easier after Sony switched away from their proprietary book format. The Sony PRS-950 was a great reader, but Sony never got the Sync and other features to work like Amazon did with their Kindles. The main reason I switched to Kindles was the ability to sync between multiple devices. Although Sony had a sync feature, it never seemed to work well and it was rather limited. If Amazon would offer a reader similar in design to the PRS-950 that was designed to allow two-column landscape view, did not have the utterly horrible light layer (of any kind), and had the latest, highest resolution screen, then I would buy one for reading outdoor or in very well lit rooms. But they never will. Amazon seems stuck on the idea of offering the best screens only on high end lighted models while putting outdated screens on the low end non-lighted models. And they are stuck on not giving us even the most basic controls on formatting. Is there anything different with the 32GB PW vs the 4GB PW (other than the amount of storage)?

I believe it supports an additional file format that Amazon use for Japanese books with text in vertical columns read right to left. It also does everything that a non-Japanese PW does, though.

What kind of special file format for Japanese books is that?
The files I am getting from Amazon Japan for my non-manga PW and Oasis are azw3 with the vertical text written right to left, like in normal Japanese books.

IIRC, you are the one who told me that Kindles have supported rtl for a long time.

Could you be thinking of the several internal changes made to azw3 since it was introduced instead?

They have indeed supported RTL text for a long time. I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that it was support for text in vertical columns that was introduced for the Japanese market.

On the subject of *.azw3 . . . .
For those readers that may have missed it in our sub-forum here;
People that have their screensaver set to 'cover mode';
That feature has recently been fixed for all (known) variations of the *.azw3 format books.

Details to be found in the sub-forum under the appropriate topic.

I tried to notify everyone who had posted a problem about this by PM, but I may have missed some of the users.

If there is, then it is runtime determined.

The 5.8.9.2 binary distributed in Japan for the PW3-4G/PW3-32G models (one file for both) and the 5.8.9.2 binary distributed in the USA for the PW3-4G only model are bitwise identical.
(And I used a proxy in Tokyo to do the download, just in case the download server was checking destination IP address.)

Manga on the PW3-32G can be displayed in two columns, and pinch to zoom works on Manga.
But those could be runtime detected feature setups based on boardID.

I don't have that firmware version installed on a PW3, nor do I have any Manga files to test with, even if I did have the firmware.

I browsed the thread and didn't see this posted: I have a hard time believing this will be in the Paperwhite lineup.

The logo on the leaked image shows silver or white letters, like the Voyage.

The Paperwhite went with dark letters that blend into the bezel with the Paperwhite 3. I don't see Amazon backtracking on that smart design decision. I think the bright letters are distracting.
