Whatever happened to the great American dream?

It turned into the urban nightmare as Mark Rogers’ anti-hero Matt soon discovers in his bleak new novel, Night within Night.

The young New Yorker is married to his beautiful student-day sweetheart Gwen; they have two kids and Matt a promising job working with a record wholesaler.

It’s a normal life. The bills and bank account are almost in balance. The whole family loves, fights, kisses and makes up.

But is it enough?

The path of true love becomes less clear after Matt opts to join an old friend Lloyd who has set up his own wholesale video business while Gwen nurtures literary aspirations.

Alvarez is unwilling to agree that the death of a member of the British parliament, in the explosion that also took the life of another man, merits an investigation of unusual importance. In his opinion, a dead MP is less trouble than a live one.

But investigate he must, and things are complicated further still when Alvarez finds himself serving under Comisario Suau, a stickler for discipline and routine, who is convinced that terrorists are responsible for the crime.

Suau soon makes his contempt for Alvarez’s rambling methods of work clear, including his seemingly stupid insistence on investigating not just the deaths of those who’d been aboard the boat, but also their lives.

Unfortunately for both of them, Alvarez’s research unearths some facts that prove sticky for all concerned, though none more so than Alvarez himself.

As ex-policeman running their own detective agency, they should put Clarice at ease, but the man from the insurance company, Martin Fisher, is determined to prove it was suicide.

Even in his ‘family’, Konrad is divisive figure. His son Anthony, a magician in his right, thought him insane.

Clarice, though she loved him, bitterly knew he and his assistant Amaryllis – an ex-ballet dance – were having an affair.

Amaryllis herself, while captivated by his magic, was horrified by his latest and mysterious illusion.

And then, just as David and George look like they might make sense of this case, Konrad’s body is found.

Worse, there’s a bullet wound on his corpse. The police say it was being shot that really killed him.

Which raises another question – was Konrad’s death really an accident or was it murder?
