With that, creating/adding and using saved searches should be just as easy as hey were before (provided you dont have huge numbers of them)

Yes. Well, there is no opengl32.dll in system32 on server core, out of the box.
So this is a new dependency i guess. Do i have to stick with 2.56 then or you think there will be a solution?

Okays. Its a dirty way but i got atleast running so that i can connect to the mobile interface or use my mobile clients to access the opds catalogue.
The main website sometimes fails with this but okay

Failed to communicate with "interface-data/init?1497017288642", timed out after: 30 seconds

I copied the missing dlls to the calibre dll folder from a gui server. ofcourse its not the clean way for for the time beeing i can life with that

Getting into the spirit of things ( ), two comments:

1) You might want to put the list of saved searches under the actions instead of on top of them. That way the actions are easily discoverable even if someone has hundreds of saved searches (and people really do have hundreds of them, sometimes hierarchical in the tag browser).

2) Could you add the copy_saved_search action to the menu? With the change it is rather difficult to get the text of a saved search. When showing the saved search box the button does this. Rationale: I use the button to get the text of a search then modify it in the search box. This lets me easily test changes before saving them and supports temporary changes that aren't saved.

@chaley: Feel free to send a PR. I did not add the copy action because in my testing it was giving an error since the hidden box has no text in it, but maybe I misunderstood something.

Pushed.

In this case I got the text from the search box instead of the saved search combo box. The "real" button could do the same thing but I didn't change it.

I also moved the actions to the top.

Suggestion 1: provide a Copy current search term button in the Add a new Saved search dialogue - if not already included in chaley's changes

Suggestion 2: move the Alter Tag Browser set of controls to the top of the Tag Browser

Suggestion 3: move the Go button inside the search bar

Suggestion 4: relocate the Show/Hide buttons into a Layout drop down. The Layout icon/menu item would be mandatory in the two Main Toolbars and the Menubar - like Preferences is in the Menu Bar.

@acidslam: Yes, Qt links against opengl on windows. So while it is not actually using opengl, the dll needs to be present.

I like the new look of 2.99.12 but I have a few suggestions/thoughts

1. The VL button now looks like it is a part of the Tag browser, so think it would look better with a line between them or the VL button could be to the right of the search box or in the main toolbar.

2. I like the new Layout button but would it look better with +/- or a check mark for Show instead of Show/Hide

3. Move Searching in the Preferences to the Look & feel in the Preferences as a tab

4. calibre X.XX created by Kovid Goyal could be a button also and link to the homepage

5. Add option to clear list of recent searches when right clicking the gear icon in the search bar

6. Add option to go to the search settings when right clicking the gear icon in the search bar

7. Add a Sort by button next to the search box

Released a new beta with even more UI polishing (2.99.12). Changes:

1. Make the Saved Searches button give easy access to all saved searches. Also use text in it so that it remains as discoverable as it was before
2. Collapse all the various show/hide buttons in the status bar into a single button
3. Make all button styles in the main window flat to match the buttons on the toolbar and generally look more consistent
4. Make the Alter tag browser and Find buttons a little nicer
5. Move the clear search button into the search field
6. Move the advanced search button into the search field
7. The Collapse all button has been removed from the Tag browser. It is now available in the right click menu of the Tag browser

I think I'm done playing now

It's not new to the beta, but the search bar changes reminded of a minor UI issue that bugs me:

After clicking in the search box, I hit the down arrow key on the keyboard and instead of the first past search, I get the second past search. After that, I can get the first search by hitting up arrow.

I cannot get the first search by hitting up arrow right after focusing the search box.

As I said, minor. But an oddity that feels wrong.

I think it is fine where it is. It does not cover the entire width of the Tag browser and your proposed alternateives all have costs that IMO are not worth it.

For an experienced user, sure. For a new user, how is she to know what the checkbox means?

Why? There is quite enough in L&F already

I dont think this is a good idea, that text changes depending on lots of things, for instance connecting a device.

Right clicks are not possible for in-field buttons in Qt

7. Add a Sort by button next to the search box

You can sort by clicking column headers, so what's the point of duplicating this functionality?
