Not too long ago I watched a Youtube interview with Elon Musk discussing the future of work in light of the new AI's expected ability to do a lot of jobs now done by fairly skilled people. His point was that jobs in the future are going to become scarcer and that we need to start changing the way we think about the necessity of everyone working.
I just did a search for this and I found a short version of the talk I watched. Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJgtRBkFnfw He suggests we start thinking about a universal basic income for everyone. Here's an interview with then President Obama on a similar topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgL32wtgeXQ I wonder how much this kind of thinking went into what Amazon is doing. Barry |

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately with shows (well, at least dramas) it's similar to how I am with books - once I start I feel like I have to finish them up if I can. It might take me a really long time to get around to it but I usually do. I give myself a little more leeway with a show than a book but if it's not something that goes on forever and I make it through more than one series/season then that's about the point the 'have to finish' kicks in. It's one reason I can be so picky about watching any, heh. But anyway I have liked the rest of Downton Abbey so I hope last series isn't too terrible.

1) I know many folks on Social Security who receive a small amount of SNAP money each month - about $15. Typically they save it up, and then buy themselves a nice meal.
2) The price of Prime is $99 per year. $10.99 per month equals $131.88 per year. $5.99 per month equals $71.88. So the SNAP receivers save $27.12 per year - not half price. 3) I wonder if there are legal repercussions to charging some Americans a different price than others. I imagine one day someone will sue about this. |

I don't think so. After all, there are lots of businesses that give 10% discounts to active duty military. Plus, AARP members, children, students, and senior citizens frequently get discounts too.

My grocery store gives a 10% discount to senior citizens and military personnel one day a month (separate days). Unfortunately, the restrictions on eligible items are so severe that it's not worth it. I tried it twice on purchases over $50 and received less than $1 discount both times. It happens on a Tuesday and that's not my normal shopping day, so I've totally given up on this faux discount.

I know, but Netflix is so jumpy on my TV that I can't imagine Amazon streaming services being better. Actually, it's not much better on my laptop or tablet, but with the smaller screen size it's not quite as noticeable. Last edited by library addict; 06-08-2017 at 11:38 PM. |

EG: A store advertising a "Military Discount", with the condition being that one had to show military ID, then there are no legal issues. Declining a "Military Discount" to a member of a foreign military who presents their foreign military ID, you'll have a problem, because the advertising neither states "United States Military Only", nor disclaims military of other countries. I am not a lawyer. This is not legal advice. |
