problems downloading a book with no DRM bought on Kobo

I buy books on the Kobo site fairly often, last time June 5, and I usually have no problem with download: I choose where to download the .acsm file, open it with the Sony Reader app (I haven't been able to use the Adobe reader for opening DRMed books for years), and I find the book in my documents.

The book I bought today has no DRM, and when I click on the Download button, that just opens the book to read it on my PC, which is NOT what I want. Anybody had this problem? Is there a solution?

I refuse to sync books with the desktop app: I want epubs I can format to my requirements and manage with Calibre before sending them as kepubs to my reader. I hate too that I have to delete all already downloaded books from the Kobo site beforehand, to not have them dumped into my reader.

I also refuse to subscribe to Facebook, and from what I've read on this forum, this seems to be the only way to get decent customer service. If I need to go through the hassle of mails and/or phone calls to be able to read the book I bought, I will never ever buy books from Kobo again.

The beauty of digital is immediate wish fulfilling: see book I want, buy book, read book. Go Kobo for making that a hassle rich painful lengthy process!

I buy DRM-free ePub's from Kobo fairly often and this has never been a problem for me. I click the download button and get a Save As pop-up where I can choose where the book will save (just like any other download) and I also change the file name from a bunch of gibberish numbers and letters to the books title. I use Chrome.

This sounds to me like a browser or OS setting might be causing this. You don't by chance happen to be using Edge with the newest version of Windows 10 do you? MS has added ePub integration to their browser which I could see causing something like this. There is probably a way to turn this behavior off I'd guess, or you could maybe try a different browser.

a, to avoid syncing your books, set up a dummy email address account with kobo.com and don't have any books in that account.

This is what I have always done.

That was is - thank you so much. I was using Edge with the newest version of Windows 10 since May 13. Downloading with Firefox worked fine. I had bought kobo books in the interval, but with DRM, and the .asc files were no problem.

I'll try to change Edge's behaviour, but I've had no success opening PDF files in Acrobat instead of the default Microsoft photo app - ridiculous.

You should be able to type default programs into the search box and then click on "Default App Settings". In the app, click on "Choose default apps by file type". Once there, you can scroll down to and click on the app next to epub to change it's default association from the list that pops up., repeat for pdf. You do need to have an application that has registered a handler for the file type since I didn't see a search for other apps selection.

I don't make much use of Edge but a quick download of a .pdf opened it in Acrobat Reader after I changed the association. YMMV...

I did that from the beginning, and it works when I open a pdf or an epub from the explorer or outlook, but not from edge.
