Instant Pot thread

I like my oatmeal on the edge of chewy. I nuke a cup of water till it boils, and then remove the water from the microwave. I dump 2/3 cup (or so) of old fashioned oats into it. (NEVER the instant or even the Quick.) After it sits for a minute, while I gather the brown sugar and butter, and my ice tea from the frig, it's ready to eat. So not actually cooked at all.

I eat Quaker Instant oatmeal. One pack of apple and one pack of maple and brown sugar mixed together add just enough water, nuke. Add real butter and full fat milk. Yum.

I don't cook. lol

Oatmeal is hard to digest so I don't eat it often. It's more like a treat.

What I hate most is the clean up. You got lid, silver disc, rubber gasket that has to removed everytime to clean and the vent piece has to be removed everytime to clean.

On top of that you have a pot that is a pain to clean but if the food explodes out of the vent you have small grooves on the unit that is a PITA to clean.

IP's stainless steel pot is very easy to clean. As far as the other parts...to be honest, I rarely remove the metal anti-block shield inside the lid because there's seldom any food spatter. Normally, I remove the silicone seal and wash that. Then I just rinse off the inside of the lid, sometimes using a bit of dish soap, and dry it. There are times when I don't even do that, depending on what I cooked. If there appears to be only steam inside the lid, I just wipe it dry with the seal still in place. My machine looks as pristine as when I bought it a year and a half ago, although the seal has yellowed a bit, which is normal. I've heard that putting it in the sunshine brightens the silicone and removes any lingering odor, but I've never tried that.

As for exploding food, tomato sauce and pasta sauce is notorious for this.

I've never have overfilled the pot to even half way and I still get volcano on certain dishes.

I had sauce start to come out of the pressure release valve only one time. In that case, I probably had the pot fuller than it should've been and/or didn't wait long enough before releasing the pressure. I often wedge the handle of a wooden spoon under the steam valve so it releases slowly. Not sure if you can do that with your machine. Also, many recipes suggest waiting at least 10 minutes before opening the valve.

Yep, it's just another thing to clean. There is also the safety issues although I think out of them all the Instant Pot is the safest unit on the market. I haven't heard of them exploding like the Power Cooker XL has. They can be dangerous. Not as dangerous at old time pressure cookers but there is still risk involved with pressure cookers.

It has nothing to do with the pot it's the lid and seal that reeks. It smells like egg farts. The entire apartment takes on that smell and he complains about it.

If I don't wash my lid, disc, seal and valve after every use it won't come to pressure or loses pressure during cooking.

So I gave my Power Cooker away last month and yesterday someone gave me their Instant Pot! I couldn't say no without insulting them.

I'm debating if I should give it to my sister or give it a trial run. The Power Cooker was a cheap knock off. This is the real deal but It doesn't do Yogurt. It's smaller than the Power Cooker and comes with a stainless steel insert instead of non stick.

Decisions.... decisions....

If your sister cooks, I'd say give it to her.
HOWEVER, I'd be interested if you would try the IP out and post how you feel it compares to the PC.

I just bought one - 3 weeks ago, maybe. My advice: do NOT try to convert your own recipes. This leads to disaster, and causes you to dislike the machine. Instead, search for recipes (there are a ton) that are SIMILAR to what you want to make. Then, convert a little bit. But now you know the correct times and settings.

I'm still working on whether it will help me, as a single person. But it does, at least, have me eating more fresh, or "real" foods, just because it is fun and gadgety.

I pulled the trigger and got the 8qt yesterday. Haven't told hubby yet, and we are on vacation until tomorrow, and it's scheduled for delivery today. I'm hoping they just leave on porch like usual. (We live in the country AND our porch can't really be seen except at a certain angle) Just have to tell hubster, now. I guess I can just tell him I got my anniversary present and he doesn't have to worry about it.

Edited to add : My IP was delivered this morning about 10:30, and was left on the porch. I had no clue UPS would actually deliver before evening, they usually come in late evening.
