Thumbs down Firmware upgrade 4.4.9344

This seems to me to be a downgrade, rather than an upgrade.
  • Under the previous firmware I only needed one touch after power up to
  • return to my current read
  • Under the previous firmware, when I powered down the device, the
  • cover of my current read was displayed on the screen.
  • Under the new firmware I now need two touches after power up to return
  • to my current read
  • Under the new firmware when I power down the device, the cover of a
  • book that I'm not currently reading is now displayed on the screen. Why
  • would I want the cover of a different book than the one I'm reading to be
  • displayed when powered off?*

I called Kobo support on this. It was explained to me that the
behaviour as I described was as a result of the latest firmware upgrade

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

One thing to try is to go to the book who's cover is incorrectly displaying and press the icon and in the popup menu, select "mark as unread" and then you should see the correct cover.

This does not match the behavior I see on my KA1 after a power down.

On my KA1 after a reboot I am at the home screen, the book I am reading is the farthest on the left on the top row. If I have other books in progress they appear to the right of that book. Meaning it takes me one step to get to what I was reading before the power down.

I'm also fairly sure the bookcover remains in a powered down state.

This is on 4.4.9349 (the KA1 version of 4.4.9344).

Absolutely not. I do not see anything remotely like you describe on any of my Kobos.

If the displayed screensaver cover doesn't belong to your most recent book the first thing you should do is go to Settings - Date and Time. Wrong Date/Time is the only time I've ever seen problems with an incorrect screensaver.

My suggestion is to mark the book (that has the cover showing) as unread.

Yes, I can read. You said it in post #122. You probably have a reason for needing to repeat it, but it escapes me at the moment.

Wrong date or time is my bet. A little complication on that is that the date and time could have been wrong when reading the book that keeps reappearing. I accidentally set the date a year in advance while reading a purchased kepub. After every sync, that book was presented as my current book at the point where I was up to when I fixed the date. I had to delete the book to fix this.

The other reason is a corrupt database. As the leath_dub is powering off, it is rereading the database at startup. If the database is corrupt, then the updates won't be stored and the described behaviour is seen.

And it is very unlikely it would have worked. Based on the report, the book that leath_dub wanted to read is not anywhere on the home screen. If it was, the report would be to ask why it isn't the first book in the top row. And the cover display for the sleep/power-off screen will always be the first book.

Quick update

After a factory reset it's working a (slight) bit better.

Blank screen when powered down, despite "Display Current read" being selected. This is still an improvement on the previous situation whereby the cover of the incorrect book would be displayed on power down

My Kobo Glo has just updated itself to firmware release - 4.4.9344

Now I cannot "see" it on either Kobo desktop or Calibre,

Please what is happening here, when the USB cable (and I have tried 3 different ones) is connect, the computer gives the audible acknowledgement that a device has been connected, but that is it, Used to show up in the file browser as well, now nothing.....HELP please

The book I was reading was marked after the upgrade as unread, I had to find where I was reading.
Time is in AM / PM, no way to set it to 24hr format.

yes, restarted several times, also same on another computer, I feel sure I have eliminated both the ESB lead and computer, so evidence points at latest upgrade, all been fine for years before this, puzzled.

That is usually a sign that the database on the device is corrupt. With that, the database is not updated properly. If you don't normally turn the device off, it could have been in this state for a while and the restart during the upgrade meant the old version of the database is read. And that was probably from before you started reading this book.

There has never been an option to choose the time format. It is set based on the language/nation you choose in the interface. This sets the locale for the device. If you choose Netherlands, then you will get a 24 hour clock. You can change the local in the config file to one that has the language you want and to time format.

What OS and version are you running? Does the device appear in device manager or the equivalent? Do you have another computer to try?
