We get so much coverage on the lamestream media about death and destruction, that this looked like it would be a refreshing read. And, the markdown is fine (80%), and the ratings outstanding (4.7 (18) Amazon; 4.42 (458) at GoodReads).

The Lightless Sky: A Twelve-Year-Old Refugee's Harrowing Escape from Afghanistan and His Extraordinary Journey Across Half the World. Author: Gulwali Passarlay.

In all of the years that we (Americans) have been fighting in Afghanistan, I have seen only one documentary (advertised, and watched only that one) about average people in the country. Just one. It was fascinating. This promises to be, too.

This isn't a great sale price ($6.99), but I've been looking for something on the Graeco-Persian Wars for a while, and Persian Fire, by Tom Holland is usually (per eReaderIQ) more than $11. So I'm probably going to bite...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Persian-Fire-...dp/B000RRA8JY/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/persian-fire-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
A "fresh...thrilling" (The Guardian) account of the Graeco-Persian Wars. In the fifth century B.C., a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece.

The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history. Tom Holland’s brilliant study of these critical Persian Wars skillfully examines a conflict of critical importance to both ancient and modern history.

The New York Nobody Knows by William B. Helmreich is on sale at Amazon.ca today for $CDN 3.99
https://www.amazon.ca/New-York-Nobod.../dp/B00F8MIIP4

The Amazon blurb:
"As a child growing up in Manhattan, William Helmreich played a game with his father called "Last Stop." They would pick a subway line, ride it to its final destination, and explore the neighborhood. Decades later, his love for exploring the city is as strong as ever.

Putting his feet to the test, he decided that the only way to truly understand New York was to walk virtually every block of all five boroughs—an astonishing 6,000 miles. His journey took him to every corner of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Helmreich spoke with hundreds of New Yorkers from every part of the globe and all walks of life. He finds that to be a New Yorker is to struggle to understand the place and to make a life that is as highly local as it is dynamically cosmopolitan."

Building the Land of Dreams: New Orleans and the Transformation of Early America by Eberhard L. Faber is on sale at Amazon.ca for $CDN 5.99

Honestly, I don't have a dog in this fight. I think that I truthfully can say that I don't favor one side over another in this conflict. I'm posting this ebook that I ran across because it's free, it's substantial (my PDF reader says that it has 400 pages), and from my cursory look it seems that the arguments are well made.

It's published by an outfit called the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE). The front page does give an author's name: Mitchell G. Bard.

Myths and Facts: A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict.

There are three editions (all but the first appear to be revisions based on the change in circumstances over the passage of time) which Amazon regularly sells. GoodReads mentions 8 editions. Both Amazon and GoodReads give excellent ratings, which is impressive considering the polarizing nature of the subject.

This free PDF edition appears to be the most recent edition available (based on the fact that its publication date is 2017).

It's nice to see some free CRE titles, again. It seemed like they went on hiatus there for a while.

WarGameVault is basically a site catering to historically-based gaming.

Among their daily special offerings are sometimes books that are very much non-fictional (I suppose they're there to help gamers make things as authentic as possible?). Today's special of the day is one of them.

It is Warfare on the Mediterranean in the Age of Sail: A History, 1571-1866. It's authored by David S.T. Blackmore. It's 402 pages long.

I could dig up only 3 ratings. That's not nearly enough to meet my criteria (20 or more). But, the ratings are all "5's." Furthermore, I made up the rule, so I can break it, right?

Oh yeah, the price. It's only $4.50. The Kindle is $14.74 right now. The only annoying thing about WarGameVault's books is that they are "watermarked PDF's." I have not bought a book from WarGameVault yet, so I don't know how obtrusive the watermarks are.

The deal is good for over 17 hours from now.

More here.

It's a must-buy for me. I've gotten very interested in this subject since reading a biography of Ferdinand Magellan recently.

Gotta post this one.

It's Coral and Brass, by Holland M. Smith; Percy Finch. Concerns the U.S. Marines in World War II, in the Pacific theater. Reprint; originally published in 1949.

There are many, many books about the War. This one stands out because 1) it is free, and 2) the ratings are through the roof, both at Amazon (4.6 stars (36) and GoodReads 4.39 (67). I encourage you to read the review on the only 1-star rating (the only one at Amazon under 4-star) at Amazon, however, questioning the legitimacy of the book, to see if you think that it has any merit.
