I never noticed that and it has been almost a year now.

The 5.8.0 initial came from a "Day 0" release of the KT3 (mine).
Evidently they started producing the device (and testing in production) prior to building 5.8.1.1
But customer 5.8.1.1 was the first firmware version it shipped with.

Diags does not have a demo mode.

But it does have a way to just put the 5.8.7.0.1 update package from Amazon at the top of visible USB storage and then just press 'do it'.

You don't have to use manual commands to install a main image from diags - diags can do that for you.

I was very much surprised when I bought this KT3 black in December(!) 2016 in a Media Markt shop in Berlin, and found it still running 5.8.0 out of the box. No idea from which old store from what a far far away country these Kindles came. They just were a bargain "end of the year" offer: 50,- instead of 70,- Euros; and the small print text on the box was in "exotic" languages, interestingly NOT including German, nor French. (AFAIRC: Besides English: Russian, Spanish, Czech, Croatian, Latuvian, Chinese, etc...)

The KT3 a friend of mine got back in mid 2016 already shipped indeed with 5.8.2 or so ...

Those must have been the "prerelease evaluation" units being cleared out.

The "prerelease evaluation" used to be marked as such but that changed (5.7.x ?? maybe ??), since then there is just a search bar command to convert such devices (and demos) to "normal resale" devices.

Because there's never mentioned the additional detailed build number with these initial fw builds, I, on a first glance, assumed that device being a test/evaluation Kindle, and therefore hoped that I could skip the downgrade.

So, as a first step, I tried to apply the ;installHtml search command right out of the box. Didn't work. But the normal procedure did.

Unfortunately, I've thrown away the sheet of paper where I noticed the two "5.8.0" build numbers. But I'm absolutely sure that the initial factory download linked here in posting #1 had a lower build ID than mine. Though both displayed as "5.8.0"! There even might be more than these two 5.8.0 builds for the KT3...

They have some of the largest malls and sales facilities in the world.

I was just going by the approximate time frames on previous firmwares.
I was also thinking it would make financial sense to manufacture roughly a 6 month stock at a time. I figure Amazon has a reasonable idea of how many of a device they will sell. Plus, they can put more than one type of kindle in that shipping container. I am guessing one plant somewhere makes most ereaders.
